scot850 wrote: 18 Jun 2021, 15:37 Well 'm officially pissed! I bought a replacement set of rims for the 'R' (a set of 17" Volans) and probably overpaid for them as they could do with re-finishing or using as winter rims as they were bought for.

Why am I annoyed? Well the reason I bought them is because a Volvo mechanic said they were too wide (8") so were rubbing on the rear flexi hoses (AWD car). Taking him at his word I bought the Volans (7" wide from an 850R). Today I have had time to check the wheels and tires to photograph them to put up for sale. What do I find? The refinished Thor rims are not 8" wide but are 7.5" wide which are the same as the summer rims which have no issues!!

Closer inspection with better lighting and more time (and not -20C), and I found the following. The tire that was rubbing was only at 20 psi!! 2nd, the rims have balance wights mounted on the inside, and the rim that was worst affected has a huge balance weight which sits proud of the rear of the rim. Normally I only have sticky weights used. It looks like this has been rubbing on the rear trailing arm which is really close to the rim.

So I could have saved myself $400 and just had the leak fixed (car was standing for a long time and I hadn't noticed it was low.

Argh!!!

Oh well, as the saying goes, if you want something done right..........................!

I would add the following though for all P80 users if going for wider rims with offsets of greater than 43mm (standard for P80) is that you need to watch on AWD cars for the rims touching the trailing arm and flexi-hose, and for FWD cars watch for the parking brake cable, particularly if the hold back loop has fallen off from the training arm.

It may be worth using 6mm wide spacer rings to give more clearance.

You never stop learning............?!

Now off to check those rear calipers!

Neil.
Yes, AWD guys need to be careful of those brake hoses. I had zip tied mine out of the way. I didn’t love how close they were to my tires since I’m running 17x7.5s with 225s.

That has to be sarcasm, because it was in the 90's with 105* heat index...

Then it stormed last night and got everything all wet. The trans is back in the car, and I'm working on buttoning up all of the bits. Only have 2-3 more hours of work time today, but I may be able to get the subframe back under the car as well.

It's at least cooler today, but still supposed to rain again tonight.

That heat hasn't reached the east coast yet. I'm dreading next week.

I can deal with the heat (sometimes), but the rain coming through tomorrow will be the problem for me. Of course when I need my garage to finish up some work on the V70R, my brother's Miata is taking it up. Maybe we can get that engine pulled and shove it back outside.
I installed the delta link mounts today, so now it's ready to throw that up into the car.

I am curious, you say you have delta links on a V70R? I know the FWD cars have one, but not the AWD.

Thanks,

Neil.

I'm converting the rear suspension to the delta link FWD rear suspension. I had already M56 swapped the car about 2 years ago, and after taking a LOT of time to decide whether to go to an M66 and bring back the AWD or go all the way with the FWD conversion, I settled on FWD. It just makes more sense for my driving style and what I want out of the car. Plus the weight savings is ridiculous... probably 500 pounds. I might be able to break 20 mpg finally!

Is it all bolt on change over or is there fab work needed? It may be worth considering this swap on my car longer term as the AWD parts continue to dry up.

Are you going to be using the rear calipers? If they are good along with the backplates I would be interested in buying them for spares.
