I checked the bundle of wires from the positive cable and they looked ok so I went to wiggle the relay and the yellow out cover was loose and came right off

I switched the airpump relay with it to see if the problem continues . It appears to be the same part and the air pump is long gone so it doesn't need anything in that spot . Or at least I don't think it needs it
You might get an SAS CODE without that relay in a few days. It’s the same relay,so Hallands in Billerica will have your new to you spare relay the cheapest.

On my T5 1999 with no air pump, I got a spare relay for free! It warms the Scot in me.

The zero order test is to see if it clicks when 12 volts is applied to the 86-85 terminal side.

Important, you have to get the polarity right , DIN SAYS12 volt positive goes on the 86 side

Next order test is to make sure the load side goes to zero ohms when it activates

High order test is to test current capacity on closing.

The zero order test will catch 99.9314159 % of failures, approximately
