"Over voltage" message 07 XC90 3.2 Help Needed

Post by VolvoS402006 »

Read the forums on this still have some questions I am hoping someone could help with. Yesterday coming home a message appeared that said "overvoltage". :o I drove the last two miles slowly as the battery light came on and the ABS light came on. Also the next morning my battery was completely drained. After reading through the forums I believe it is either the alternator or the voltage regulator.
My question is:
On the 07 3.2 is it possible to change just the voltage regulator or do I need to replace the alternator?
I changed the rubber gear/belt on the alternator about two years ago so I doubt that needs replacing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. :D
    Thank you,
    Joel

You should be able to replace the regulator alone but measure first the voltage with the engine running and a good battery.
After firing up you should see some 14.5v for a few moments
There seems to be two regulators, need to compare the numbers with yours

Thank you for the reply. :D I went ahead and ordered a new Bosch 180 amp alternator . I know the alternator has never been replaced so I decided since I am this far into the job a new alternator is a good idea.
I was able to source the Bosch online through World Pak for $225.
    Two questions: :?:
    1. When I remove the intake manifold will I need to replace the gaskets?
    2. Is the new alternator the only new parts I need to swap out the old alternator with the new one?
    Thanks,
    Joel

Thanks for the feedback! I was able to replace the alternator and the car is charging and running fine now. :)
    I do have one question:
The anti-skid light is on and I cannot clear it, does anyone know if this was related to the alternator going out, and how do I clear this?
    Thanks for any help shared!
