Well, I’m about 5 hours in to replacing the 4 bolt control arms on n XC70
Job notes
The bolts reside inside the subframe amd are shielded by the subframe, transmission, and engine oil pan. You need to do some clearancecjacking to get your tools squarely on the bolts. They are tight and you will need at least a 12 inch bar to crack them.
Jack the car up high so you get some crack room
I found a mix and match of 16mm and 17 mm hex heads
I still haven’t figured out the magic of getting the bolts started. I think you need the knucklecwell clear of the control arm to present it square to the subframe. Once you get one bolt on each bushing started you can pull it square and do the other two easily

Ah, the fun of the 4 bolts system! Why make a job easy when you can make it hard, good old Volvo saying..........!
One side I can usually get to with a flexible knuckle on the breaker bar or ratchet and an extender bar.
Other side it is easiest to jack the motor to get access.
Neil.

I think I just need to free the knuckle up enough so that I can get the control arm threads flat against the sub frame. They are naturally tensioned at an angle so that you can’t start the threads easily

I popped the tie rod end off, swung the knuckle out of the way and had the bolts hand started in 2 minutes.
The other side went easier as I was rebuilding the axle shaft boots, so the knuckle was already free.
