2001 V70 2.4T: Tubes hanging under right side of car

Post by prwood »

Today I noticed a couple of tubes hanging from under the right side of the car. Upon closer inspection, it looks like they may have originally been held in place by clips, most of which seem to be missing. The rearmost clip is still in place, and when I looked, it had some twigs and leaves stuck in it, so I'm wondering if I drove over some branches during a recent storm, which then pulled out the rest of the clips.

In any case, I'm hoping someone can help me identify what lines these are, if they are supposed to be clipped on elsewhere, and if so, what part the clips are and where I can order them?

Here are some photos:

Looking towards the rear of the car where the lines are clipped in.

Looking towards the front of the car where the lines are hanging. Notice the screws protruding downwards. Are they supposed to have clips attached to them to hold these lines in place? If so, what parts diagram would I find them on and/or what is the part #?

I'm thinking I can probably duct tape the lines in place until I can find the proper way to attach them.

This could be the parking brake line, if so, these travel along the heat shield (obscured behind the heat shield) and retained by a 1" wide clips attached to the undercarriage. Use zip ties.

I don't believe so - on my model, the parking brake cable runs down the middle in the same channel as the exhaust. These lines are on the very far right side, almost under the doors, not under any heat shields.

Here's a diagram from alldata of removing the parking brake cable from my model:

My first thought was that they were related to emissions in some way - carbon filter, evap, or something like that. Based on their composition and size and the fact that they go back towards the fuel filler and gas tank. But I'm not sure how to narrow it down.

There's nothing really to zip tie to under there, unless I can drill into the plastic panel that those screws are coming out of... not sure if it's a void under there or if I'd hit something else.

SOLVED:

TLDR: The smaller line is the carbon canister return line, the larger line is the main fuel supply line. The missing part is a fuel line cover or "rail" which snaps over these lines and is Volvo Part # 30716236.

I found two resources that helped me figure this out.

First, this thread from Swedespeed informed me that one of these pipes is the main fuel line running to the engine, and that the missing part is a "rail" or cover that snaps over the lines: https://www.swedespeed.com/threads/some ... th.156744/

These are part of the "fuel lines from tank to engine" parts diagram:

The part I am missing is "rail," #5 from the above image, Volvo part # 30716236. The clip in the rear which is still intact is "clip," #4 in the above image. I believe the fuel-related hose that's hanging down is #16, "delivery pipe."

Once I found the part #, that led me to this short and helpful video from IPD, which neatly illustrates the problem, describes the lines (the smaller one is a carbon canister vent line) and shows how to install the rail:

For the time being I have rigged up this setup - drilled some holes to run zip ties through and secure the lines to the underside of the body, also used a couple of old spark plug boots to shield the lines from rubbing on the screws right next to them. I wasn't super excited about drilling into the underside of the car, not knowing what was underneath, but I felt that I needed to fix this right away since one of the lines is a fuel line.

I would probably feel better with the proper replacement part, but it's $63 or higher. Trying to decide if I want to spring for it or not.
