02 V70-XC Misfire - help with hose identification?

Post by faderjockey69 »

My daughter drives our 2002 V70-XC (5cyl turbo 2.4). It has about 125k miles on it. This weekend it started running rough. Codes set were P0305 Cylinder 5 misfire, and P0496 powertrain. A quick search on here produced the possibility that hoses could produce these codes, so I looked at it last night and found a hose that was about 8-10in long and was brittle and split all the way down. One end of the split hose attaches to a "T" where the red arrow on the right points, then it travels under the intake to an inline filter looking device pictured in the red rectangle. Another short hose connects to the intake at the red arrow on the left.

What is this hose and could it being split potentially cause the codes and misfire?

Did it likely split due to age/drying out, or is that inline device clogged, causing a "blow out"?

Thanks!

It’s part of the evaporative emissions system. On a turbo, the manifold can be both under vacuum ( normal) or pressure ( boost) so you cant just purge the canister with a simple vacuum connection. Thus, the T connection and two vacuum connections to different spots to purge the canister.

The small filter like thing is a check valve, it only allows air to flow one way. It has to go in the right way, so mark it up

Those hoses and the crack will give you a rough idle and perhaps a misfire code, so you have found a problem which matches your symptom. They fail on time usually, and yours are due.

I had this exact same failure on my P80 about three years ago.
