Wheel nuts...

Post by ashleyg82v702001 »

Hello all, I have a question are the wheel nuts standard across the range? I have (excluding my lockers) 2 different types of wheel nut
1. Set is solid
2. Set has a loose floating conical collar.

The type 1 set ceases onto the wheels constantly I need a breaker bar to undo them. (it doesn't matter if I torque them of not they are a pain.

Type 2 the collar acts like a washer thus preventing this ceasing...

Where can I get more of these? Stealership has been unhelpful only telling me they can order them for over £100

Many thanks for your help peeps

different yr and models have different torques, some are 81 ft lbs, others 103 ft lb.
A free floating sleeve should be able to take higher torque.
Just guessing but it sounds like it makes sense.

Looking at the fitment from FCP the 2001 V70 uses this style

If you want to buy aftermarket

Here are the specs if you need a new lug bolt or several

M14 x 1.5

60 Degree Captive washer

25 mm depth (minimum 23 mm threaded)

edit 19 mm drive socket compatible

Good luck

- I use a tiny amount of anti-seize on the lugs in all may cars. Zero issues removing them.

- If you need to buy some wheel lugs, try ebay UK website and see what you find...

Haha,

Tiny anti-seize (the equivalent of a drop of water) on wheel lugs, have been doing it for 30 yrs.
Zero issues.
Removing the wheel lugs is a breeze.

THe washer ones are better because it prevents friction at the wheel alloy seat: the washer stays fixed and the lug rotates around the washer. On the non washer ones the lug rotates directly against the wheel seat and tends to have too much friction making correct tightening torque difficult to obtain.

Oragex... Yes this is exactly my problem when I come to remove them they won't bxxxxy move 😂
I did the lock nut up hand tight then a gentle 8th turn with the bar and trying to remover them have sheared the lock key 🔩 🗝... I'm not a happy bunny. I know it wasn't over tightened it was done in almost 0 degrees temp and now it's like 28 so I'm assuming expansion has caused it to lock

There is the other UK forum where stuck wheel lock nuts are a common complaint, these appear the get stuck very hard, you will find on that forum a few tricks. One thing that can also help preventing stuck nuts is to clean the bead surface of the wheel, and maybe to spread a small amount of antiseize - but not grease - only on the angled bead surface. But even without antiseize, if the bead is smooth and free of corrosion, it should work better the next time. May also try to remove the locking nut the first, the last nut is always harder to release

Thanks for the advice.
I've always removed locking nut first and obviously don't torque it, unfortunately my car
Seems to bind the nuts.
I'll give the antiseize a go.. Once I've managed to remove the seized locking nut
