850 How to repair an electric seat that no longer reclines

Post by manovlov »

Hy Buddies,

I repaired my front seat today. Our friend Robbie DIY made a video long time ago. I thought it could be intersting to try his method. It not tricky, but the leather is a bit dirty from inside.

Warning :
In Robbie's Movie, he pulls the leather of the back of the seat and hurts the foam. It's not necessary to do so. Pick up springs as much as needed not more. Let's go.

With a pair of pliers, cut the rings holding the leather seat to free the bottom of the chair back cover.

Carefully remove the rings.

Prepare for reassembly by positioning collars in advance. As i was not sure of my collars, i have doubled them.

Gently remove the dust from the leather, be careful, on the support, there are quite fragile nubs

Raise the leather cover on a third until you see the backrest motor appear. This manipulation will make your hands dirty...

To unscrew the two screws which hold the profile blocking the cable in the motor, a flat wrench of 8 is necessary. Socket or ratchet will not fit, well, it will be less easy.

And we arrive to this point. On the picture, you can see that the first screw is out, the second still in place, the cable bracket, that keeps the motor cable in place.

The issue : the cable is inside the sheath

Don't forget the bracket. There a hole in the seat amount

Heat the crimping ring for a few seconds, let the plastic melt, extract the ring

Once the support and the two screws are removed, we can detach the spring which is at the level of the motor. Start by removing it on the seat side, not on the motor side.

The control cable and the sheath are held by a collar, it is necessary to cut it, that facilitates the handling of the unit. It is necessary to heat a little the ring of crimping to allow to withdraw it easily. Once the ring is removed, the control cable should appear. For my part, I removed about a centimeter of sheath, to be sure. Then we reheat the ring a little, we reposition and we wait a few minutes. The melted sheath comes to put itself in the holes of the crimping ring. Then put the command cable in the motor, put the bracket in place, screw the 2 screws, and fix the spring back.
Nota : if you can't introduce the cable in the motor, make it turn between fingers a little, until if will match with the motor print position.

We reattach the spring, first on the side of the seat on the engine side, then, with a pair of pliers we reposition it on its hook in the backrest

Put back the leather in place, double the collars, be sure everything is okay, tighten the collars, cut off the excess, pull up the seat and have a good cup of coffee. I imagined something really complicated but in fact no, it's simple, and logical, a few studs, 2 screws of 8 a support, really simple. I hope this can help someone or make them understand that it's not that difficult. Go for it.

Thanks for the write-up , Manov.

People have used both the “ hog rings” and zip ties fir the “ collars” you mention. When I used zip ties , I used 4 inch ( 10 cm) the first time which we were really hard to work. 20 cm are much easier
