I have 2004 Volvo V70 2.5T AWD wagon 253k mi and my oil leak was coming from my exhaust VVT Cam. There was a good 1/4-1/2 inch of axial play. The new hub body did have play but it was ~2mm. There is an inner sleeve that fits on the body where it joins the shaft and that is what wears. My intake cam had more play than the new hub body but a lot less then the exhaust so changed the seals, rings and reinstalled the old intake. Dont drive that car that much so it may last for years.
Be careful bolting the adjusting hub to the gear - I had difficulty attaining a torque value and broke one of the bolts :O

My 2005 XC90 2.5T is now at ~ 125K miles with leaking cam seals, which I will replace soon.
- My VVT Hubs are still OK, not much of an axial play (yet).
- Re VVT: my plan is ---> whenever the VVT fails (usually around 180K-200K bc of excessive play), I will replace the VVT Hub anyway bc rebuilding the gearing mechanism inside the VVT Hub is impossible.
- Currently I have no VVT codes, car runs fine.
- Question for the Green O-ring gurus...
1. In the absence of symptoms, should I replace them?
2. Since these O-rings are aftermarket and not Volvo Genuine part, where did you buy from (which ebay seller), any long-term report on a particular O-ring brand?

My VVT Cam lasted 253k (never got a code just the start of a leak) so I wouldn't worry about your cams
I got my green O rings from FCP Euro they were a perfect fit. Since you are replacing the CAM seals and will have the CAMs off might as well change them. Obviously you will need the CAM lock prior to removing the CAMs. Finally you may wish to get the CAM seal seating tool - FCP sells these too..
Good luck!
