Dash lights and turn signals

Post by Messerschmitt101 »

Hey folks,

Haven't been here in a hot minute, which is both a blessing and a curse (in some ways). But as a refresher: I have a '96 850 GLT sedan. At least that's what the VIN says it is, but I definitely have an NA engine. That's another question though...

I'll cut straight to the chase: My dash lights are acting up, and I have a working theory.

So background first, my cyclops light is out and anytime I press the brakes the dash indicator light comes on. But whenever that happens and the dashboard and console lights are on (they're connected it seems?) those ones go out, but the brake light remains on. Additionally, if I turn a signal on it will blink opposite of what the signal does (Signal flashes on, dash lights out).

I've done some homework, and I've found two plausible solutions:
One: It's the brightness slider. I've read these are problematic for some 850 models. Obviously this is ideal because it's a $25 USD part. The slider is very touchy, and sometimes putting it at max kills the lights for a bit and I drive without them (not ideal after dark... thank goodness for open highways and cruise control).
Two: it's the alternator. Since the dimming and flickering only happens when I engage other electronics like my windows, windshield wipers, and turn signals. I have also noticed that when I lock my doors, the headlights dim slightly while the mechanism is engage. Thankfully they do not when I use my signals.

So what do you think? Am I on the right track with the slider assembly? Or could this be something more serious/in depth like a wiring problem behind the dash?
I will be ordering the slider once I make this post, and if that fixes all my woes I will let you all know, but until then I am curious to see what else it could be.

Does the issue only happen when the lights are switched on? I was getting all sorts of issues with random lights, signal lights on all the time. It turned out I had fried the light switch when I accidentally shorted the battery terminals.

Your car is a 96 GLT = NA motor. 97 GLT = LPT motor.

I have yet to try it without my lights on. I will do that tonight on my way home and update this when I return.

How difficult was the light switch repair? Or was it just something you had to live with?

Light switch repair is fairly easy. The P80 cars had an issue with the switches when relatively new. I think there was a recall on them or a warranty swap of some sort.

On the V/S70 it is a case of popping the old unit out and swapping over to a replacement unit. A used unit from a junkyard.

Looking at a picture of the 850 dash it is similar. It can be a bit of a swine to get out as it has a couple of spring clips (one each side I think) and it can be a bear to pull out. There are 3 options:

1) pull the knob off and then use a pair of pliers to pull the knob shaft to easy it out. If it does not come out fairly easily, then don't wreck it.
2) Carefully prize the switch next to it out and this makes it easier to get into the light switch to help prize it out without damaging the dash.
3) Take the lower dash panel off and push the unit out from the back.

Hey all,

Wanted to update this. School picked up and I haven't really had a chance to be active here. Which is ironic considering I have to drive 80 miles a day, but I digress.

So the issue hasn't gone away, but it is happening much less frequently. At this point I cycle between the light settings I have (three positions) so in the day I do not have my dash lights AND headlights on, and only turn them on at night.

I do think it is the slider, since the only times the lights flicker are when I fiddle with it (Which I make a point to /not/ do). I will order one of them and go from there (The one I was going to order originally was sold out when I got home :/ )
Thanks for the help on this, and I plan to follow scot850's suggestions guide to the letter.

Maybe now I can actually get around to my new rear shocks...
