2004 XC70 parking brake delaminated and carnage ensued...

The parking brake shoe(s?) de-laminated on the passenger rear side of my car and caused an intermittent but catastrophic jam. I took the rotor off to see the carnage: the shoes, most of the hardware including the cable connection and the brake backing plate are trashed. What's worse, the part of the rear hub that the brake shoes sit on has been snapped off.

I have put it back together without the parking brake parts, but I will want to fix it. I see that there is a repair bit to replace the broken hub assembly-- has anyone used these with success? This is a German site, does anyone know a North American source?

I am considering having a look at the local pick-and-pull for a backing plate and some hardware bits. Does the axle have to come out to swap out the backing plate?

the rear wheel bearing and hub is held by 4 bolts, then theres the knuckle, I don't remember how thats attached.
Once the bearing is out theres nothing much holding the axle, it can probably stay.
One of the bolts holding the wheel bearing hub is captive, it can stay put,
remove the other 3, I think it was a 17 mm offset box end wrench.

on this drawing, I think you need part #7 ?

I think it may be quicker to fabricate something similar. But in any case, that approach looks workable.

No. I don't think even the wheel hub needs to come off. Here I don't see any interference between the plate and the hub (marks of hub).

I have removed a lot of captive brake plates by snipping the “ thin bit” to allow them to be bent off. I don’t even reattach the cut, the bolts hold them fine


You could use a bit of flashing and pop rivet a repair piece , too.

What caused this, is this from normal usage?im sure i read others that have had this happen. I thought it common in cold climate countries NOT to use the handbrake.

Define "cold"? They delaminate just fine in humid subtropical climate :)

Also I would not trust leaving none of my cars in Park alone while they are even on a slightest slope.

It seems that parking brake shoes falling apart is not uncommon-- see cn90's excellent post on his XC90 (same system). I have been using the parking brake routinely until now, but had noted that it didn't hold as well as the one on my 2006-- I thought it might just need an adjustment (I have had this car for about a year, no maintenance records, so no information on this). The parking brake didn't work properly on my 2006 when I bought it, but it had to be fixed by the prior owner in order to pass safety (cars are only inspected for safety when they change ownership here in Ontario, Canada).

I usually roll 30-60k on a set of front brakes and twice that on rear brakes.

It makes sense to renew the parking brake shoes at every rear brake job.

I adjust mine twice a year, at tire swap time

It is cn90 here...

The XC90 parking writeup I wrote is in VRD.

As abscate said, the Rear Rotor lasts about 90K-120K or so for 2 rear pad sets. Once the Rear Rotor comes off, just replace the parking brake shoes + hardware.

You do parking brake only once (maybe twice) during your ownership as a 2nd or 3rd owner.

My 1998 BMW 528i P brake delaminated at 10y/100K time frame...
