1998 V70 GLT FWD timing belt change...starting now!

There may be a bolt below the crank pulley that functions as a belt retainer. You should be able to get the belt past this bolt, but if not remove the bolt temporarily to get the belt on. To hold the belt against the pulley for installing on top pulleys, use half a spring type clothes pin or similar to wedge against this replaced bolt and hold the belt in place.

I actually had this metal guard that had to come out.

Then I could wiggle the belt over the plastic covers on the firewall side of the engine.

This metal piece was on toward the front bumper .... What a female Dogg!

Now....the belt seems wayyyyyy to small and won't go around the water pump.


So what is the order of installation?


Belt goes around crank
Belt goes over idler pulley
Belt goes up to intake cam sprocket

Then.....

Exhaust, water pump, and tensioner pulley?

It wont fit

Do I remove the tensioner, and get the belt around the tensioner pulley first?


Then once the belt is on...install the tensioner?
Them pull the pin?

Looks way to tight.

I'm taking off the new belt to make sure it's the same size.....

And putting it side by side with the old belt.

Shoulda done that the .invite I cut the old belt off.....

Oh well.

The belts match up exactly. Friggg. That's not the issue.


What is the process of installation?

The crank pulley ....that part of the timing belt goes on first.

What's next? Thanks in advance , it's getting dark and we just keep running into issues...

The procedure says water pump last but many find it easier to do tensioner pulley last as it’s smooth.

Loosen the bolts on the idler to get some more slack

I use a 30mm. Box end wrench as a tension tool to fit the belt on the water pump

Once on, take it through two turns by hand to make sure the timing marks are aligned

It was stuck over an unknown bolts underneath. Got the belt on!

I am gonna do four or five revolutions of the motor before I pull the pin.

I have the spark plugs out.

Do I pull the pin first?

Or rotate the motor first?

Everything is lining up ...but I didn't rotate the motor yet

Pull pin , or turn over hand crank over engine.

Pull the pin first, then do the revolutions by hand.

Check that the marks all come back to home. If they don't you have to remove the tensioner, complress it sllllllooowwwwwwwwlllllllllyyyyy, re-install the belt with everything in time, try again.
