Power steering pressure line
Okay so I replaced my power steering pump today since the previous owner messed up the tank on the other one. All is good except I have power steering fluid pissing out of the fitting and am wondering if and how many o rings are supposed to go on the pressure line and where they should go since it had two on in but they are really chewed up.

There aren't supposed to be ANY on the pressure line. O-rings can't handle the pressure. It has to be a metal-on-metal joint on both ends of the line.
The return line's another story - it's pretty low-pressure.

All right, my mistake. However, what I said is true in general.
Hydraulic pressure lines should never use O-rings, gaskets, teflon tape, thread sealer or any other type of soft part in their fittings. They should always use steel-to-steel cone joints, like brake lines.
If Volvo designed the system to use O-rings, then they designed it wrong.

This brings back memories. What happened here was the OP serviced this thing, the o-ring hung up I the ps pump, s/he put another one in to replace the “ missing” one and the two o-rings got mangled on the reinstall.jboncher01 wrote: ↑10 Oct 2021, 18:02 Okay so I replaced my power steering pump today since the previous owner messed up the tank on the other one. Just get a new one and replace.
We might have the size documented in the master thread.
Well, crap. This thread says there should be 2. Size is in there.

Since my PS pump has been squaking for a while and it seems that it wobbles quite badly (the serpentine belt is inside out by now) I am going to replace it. Now I wonder if I should replace the PS pressure line as well as it seems to be leaking a bit. Is this an awful job or can it be done without raising the rack (and the engine)? I removed one of these lines when parting out a car, but we took out the subframe so everything seemed to be easy then.

.
Not so sure that Volvo messed up the design by using O-Rings? Doesn't seem like a piston ring oil burning or lifetime transmission fluid issue.

A bit late but just completed the pressure line replacement on my 2002 S60 2.4t FWD. This video gave me the confidence to tackle it. Key is watching the routing above rack when you pull the old line out. I did it in the garage on ramps, no subframe or engine movement needed. Removing lower rear engine mount would help, I didn’t.Clemens wrote: ↑20 Apr 2024, 08:24 Since my PS pump has been squaking for a while and it seems that it wobbles quite badly (the serpentine belt is inside out by now) I am going to replace it. Took me about four hours but I work slow. Primarily used a crows foot socket on a swivel at the rack fitting but did use a stubby a bit, couldn’t really get my hands in there with the stubby wrench to tighten it (had to use a pry bar to push it). My line did not come with orings and my Volvo dealer was closed. Harbor Freight 5/16 ID by 7/16 OD 1/16 wide included in the Harbor Freight HNBR set #67644 worked. No leaks, saved about $600 in parts and labor.
Good tip below from Abscate. My Volvo dealer parts dept is closed on Saturday…

measure the id to 0.307 a 302 pin is loose and a 5/16 pin is just a tad over. The width is 0.072 so the size they gave me is a -011. (5/16 ID by 7/16 OD 1/16 Wide) That size is included in the Harbor Freight HNBR set #67644 as reference if someone else gets stranded on a weekend. Be careful with using Home Depot o-rings. EPDM is very common for water etc and that will not do well with oil or gasoline.

i think fwd is a bit better for access, , i'm looking at mine now, cant see anything.
seriously considering pulling the angle gear and/or dropping the subframe.
Didn't you say you bought the line on amazon.?

I’ve done five racks now, on P80s , and I would be impressed by anyone who could do that without dropping the subframe. Maybe P2 s are easier
