Had cooling fan relay go bad (or so I thought), which caused fan to run on and drain battery.
Swapped relay with aftermarket relay and resolved issue, however the aftermarket shorted out and literally caught fire, which took some wiring with it, but stopped short of battery box and harness.
I ordered new OEM fan and relay/connectors from Gates, however now the fan is back to running.
I've noticed that the connector is providing voltage and the ECM feed is providing voltage indicating that something is telling the fan to run. I suspect that I may have a bad ECM now, as I'm receiving a ECM-P048012 (circuit short to battery) and P048013 (circuit open).
Any thoughts on bad ECM?

The signal line may of shorted to battery and then the current open the signal line between the short and the ECM. If the fan runs all the time this is highly probable. Clear the codes and see what comes back. One or both might be an artifact.

Traced battery back to fuse box and ground to frame. The violet lead runs straight to the ECM. There is some current on ECM violet lead, so I'm wondering if the ECM was damaged by previous relay shorting out and catching fire. I actually ordered genuine fan and relay from Volvo dealer, but fan is still running constantly, as soon as battery is applied.

With the battery disconnected:
Take a Ohm meter and check for shorts between Violet & Power then Violet & Ground.
Check for open circuit on the Violet lead between the fan controller and the ECM.

Thanks!

I will cut the harness back and trace the violet and meter it out and will respond.
Been frustrating....

Hey, I've had the same issue as you with the ECM connector catching fire. Had it rewired and an OEM ECM installed but that shorted too. Currently waiting on genuine cooling fan assembly and ECM to come in - did this end up fixing the issue for you?
