Neil must be right that it's bad engine mounts allowing the engine to shift back and put extra weight on the axle center bearing. In this drive shaft diagram, is the grinding happening at #4 bearing anchorage (part 30735338 for $250) and/or the bearing on the #3 right axle (part 8251761 for $600)?

Where can I look to see evidence of the grinding? How bad does this engine mount under the crank shaft look? If I replace the engine/torque mounts, might I be ok to not replace the axle and/or its bearing anchorage?

I recently replaced the timing belt, its tensioner, coolant pump, accessory belt, and its tensioner and idler. I also removed the broken front left brake dust shield. The grinding still happens at acceleration, louder relative to how much the engine weight is shifting backward. The grinding speed increases with engine and/or wheel speed, but I can't tell which.

The mount looks fine , the drive shaft carrier bearing is pretty rusty

Can you spray some pb blaster on both sides and see if it changes the noise ?

Abscate beat me to it. Do what he suggests and see if it makes a difference. The bearing is supposed to be sealed but it is not 100% effective. However, if the bearing has gone dry then it will get really noisy.

If the engine mounts are broken it will put additional load on this bearing as it is mounted to the engine. Replace any broken mounts and oil the bearing to see if that improves the noise level. If it reduces the noise noticeably, it does not mean it is fixed the bearing will still have to be replaced.

Is the mount actually broken under the crank pulley? If you are not sure, place a floor jack with a piece of wood between it and the oil pan and gently raise the engine near the mount and see if there is any separation between the rubber part and metal portion.

You don't need the mount. All it is is a means to support the bearing. Yours should be able to cleaned up easily.

The bearing is supported inside this support.

The axle does not need to be replaced either. The bearing itself can be replaced. If I recall the bearing is still listed under the 850 but for some reason not for the V/S/C 70. Same bearing. I did find one from a ford transit van in Turkey that has the same spec. The only difference was it was slightly chamfered on one of the outer race surfaces but that is not an issue.

My local dealer managed to remove the bearing for me, but others have removed it with a cold chisel. I ref0tted the bearing using a piece of steel fence pole which was the right diameter. Bearing is not cheap from Volvo. I think I paid $150 for it.

Just a quick follow up. Thought I had lost these during the move, but found today in an unmarked box!

These are both center bearings for the RH front axle on a P80 (in-case you have an AWD).
Center RH axle support bearing
Center RH axle support bearing
RH bearing is Volvo OE. Not listed separately for a 98-00 V/S/C70. Part # 9181693 was listed for an 850.

LH bearing is a European bearing (Dutch made I believe) which was listed for a Ford Transit van. Bought in Turkey for about $10 US including shipping! I bought 2 and one has been running in a V70 for the last 3+ years and about 20,000 miles.

Dimensions for the bearing are on the aftermarket box in millimeters 45 x 75 x 19 (ID x OD x Width).

Thanks for the information. The grinding decreased when I removed some of the weight I was hauling around (Volvo parts and tools!). Accelerating with all that weight really strained the affected part.

I sprayed the bearing with Kroil, aiming the spray where it meets the axle. After doing this, I still got it to grind under extreme circumstances, but the grinding overall had decreased. However, I had also removed a bunch of weight so that may be helping.

How many days/miles will this spray fix keep the grinding down?

FCP has part 9181693 for $166 from Volvo and $31 from Febi. Tasca has the bearing for $134. Tasca lists it for 1993 through 2016 Volvos though FCP stops at 1998.

I hate to buy aftermarket parts for an intensive job like this, especially since I can't press out the bearing myself. I'll test the grinding with more weight in the car and also check my mounts. I'll replace any failed mounts that I find and see if the grinding changes. I really should do all these diagnostics before throwing parts at the problem. Thanks.

Firefox, I have a spare 1998 axle I can loan if you don’t mind doing the job twice. Or maybe we work a swap. I do have a 20 ton press at the shop, too

Suggestion. Crack and remove the two m8 12 mm hex bolts on the carrier, then articulate the axle out. Now try spinning the bearing by fingers feeling smoothness and listening for noise.
