Turbo Help!
Hey everyone, I've been searching far and wide for the correct turbo for my car. I have a 1999 V70 XC and the engine code is B5254T. As far as I can tell my car takes a TD04HL-13T but I'm seeing those with a triangle bolt pattern or a square bolt pattern. So I'm at a complete loss for what I need. I've read I can't swap it with a 14t because they have different patterns but I'm also seeing 13Ts and 14Ts with identical patterns so it comfuses me even more. I've also heard I can do a swap with a 15g or a 16t? I'm new to turbos so I'm getting more and more confused about what I need to buy so a little clarification would be a life saver

Can you post a picture? Are you sure it is a 13T and not a 13G? I have a good used 13G sitting under a bench and I can compare if it is the same or if there is a variance. I fairly certain the one I have came from a 98 V70XC.

I don't have any pictures... It's still installed on my car since I still need it as a daily driver. Is there a way I can find the type number while it's still installed on the car? Because if that's the case I can just look at that and get an exact replacement

Get a mirror or borescope and take a picture if that plate, after cleaning.

You can see the turbo's nameplate without fancy optical equipment beyond a flashlight, just take a look back there.
The stock turbo on a 99 V70XC was a 13g, so that's almost certainly what you will find.
You can upgrade to a larger turbo no problem. However just slapping on another turbo gets you nothing because the ECU regulates the boost, the turbo just provides it.
The main thing that must also be changed is the ECU, you need to get it "tuned" i.e. reprogrammed for more boost. It is also helpful to put in higher flow rate injectors if you put in a larger turbo, however the tune is really what determines injector size. So talk to your tuner first, then figure out turbo and injectors you want with what tune, then source the goodies and slap em on.
With a 99 you can't just grab another ECU that is already tuned for a larger turbo, you are stuck with the ECU in the car so tuning is the only option.
If you want to just install a 15g or 16t and worry later on about tuning (or not), you can do that no problem. The car will run fine, though the 15g/16t will not provide as much pep at the low end of rpms. The ECU will call for boost but not get as much as expecting, and adjust for it.

So after much painful cleaning and forcing my arm through narrow openings that it should never be capable of achieving, I cleaned the nameplate off and got a mediocre picture which very faintly shows it is a TD04HL-13T! What would be the difference between the 13t and 13g? Because one of you were saying my car is supposed to have the 13g which it doesn't

There are a couple of notes on the subject. I have now found the 13T is a newer variant Volvo used:

Thanks a ton scot! My biggest concern is my turbo is spitting oil, which one of those articles says the P80's PCV valve can cause oil to be spit from the turbo, but would that happen to mine as well? My ecu is also only showing under 1psi max boost when I drive, which is way low, so I'm guessing the seals are blown out, correct? Can I fix that just by replacing the compressor housing or do I need to replace the entire turbo assembly? The car has about 211,000 miles on it now so would it be smarter to just replace the whole thing either way?
