More likely the Column lock rather then the Electrical switch.

The Column kept the switch from turning all the way to the start position. On my 2003 S40 I solved that problem with a push to start switch that cost me $10.00. It was the middle of the winter and there was no I was going to spend 4+ hours changing the Column lock in subfreezing temperatures.

The push to start switch works so well that I never will spend the 4+ hours to replace the $190.00 Column lock. I'll use the $180.00 difference for something other.

The Column lock is one of the few design flaws on the X40 ( Nedcar ) platform.
