Fuel Pump Relay(Car Shutting Off)1985 760Turbo Auto.

Post by turbo no/go »

Here we no/go again.
I was driving along 2 days ago and the car just quit running. No warning, no sounds, no warning lights.Temp normal, 1/2tank gas, driving in neighborhood doing about 30mph.
The only indication that something was wrong was fuse #1(external fuel pump) was blown and the fuel pump relay was clicking. Not doing it's normal 1 click when you turn the key, but clicking repetively as you try to start the car , and when you just turn the key over to 2(acc) it clicks 5-6 times(fast).I replaced fuse #1 and fuel relay at first, and it made no change, car still would not start.I replaced the in-tank fuel pump/screen, external pump/filter, no start.
As I was checking the wires under the relay panel(inside car, behind ashtray) I would get a click from the f.p. relay when I touched the brown wire(1 of 6) that connects to to it.I tried to start the the car and it started.I tried to set the relay panel back into the space it belongs and the car shut off. So apparently something is "shorting out" the relay.I cleaned all the connections on the relay and all wire ends.I can't find any corrosion or any damaged/broken wires. The wires inside the car are in great shape, the wires under the hood are not. Under the hood I've cleaned and repaired(electrical tape)all wires possible and cleaned all grounds.
The battery is brand new but sometimes the battery gauge drops into the red when you do things like turn on the headlights and put the car in reverse, doing both at the same time has shut the car off more than once.
With wiring checked, battery new, ignition coil new, plugs new, both pumps/filters replaced, fuses and relays replaced.... what could be causing the relay to stop working sporaticly and the car to shut off?
