Immobilizer question

Post by subzerocarfanatic »

I am trying to resolve the issue with my C70 so that it will start and drive like it should. It will start and drive beautifully once I get it running but in order to do that I have to pull the blue 15 AMP fuse in the triangle shaped fuse/relay box mounted on the shock tower. It is the fuse that is for the ignition switch , the 1st fuse towards the front, anyway I have posted this issue before but never resolved the issue or found anyone with an opinion or input so I thought I would see if anyone thinks it could be related to the key antenna ring immobilizer since the fuse I pull is ignition related.
I pull the fuse for about 5 to 10 seconds reinstall it and it will start every single time without fail but if I do not pull the fuse the ETM dash light that comes on each time briefly before the car starts will not light up and the car will not even try to start. Anyone ever had any similar issues with the immobilizer antenna ring or anything similar? I would be very grateful for any help or thoughts. Thanks.

Hook her up to VIDA. Could be ignition switch is showing key in after being off. This will tick it off...

I’ve erroneously thought it was an electrical detection of the key in the ignition switch by a micro switch but having had one apart, it is the antenna key ring of course. No moving parts.

Abscate fail above - its a pin that gets pushed into the electrical part of the igntion switch and is then expressed on pin XX of the same (model year dependent)

If you leave a key on “too long “ ( 2^16 counts?) there is an ECM code for that, but then it will do the start , stall….start , run…..thing

From Evita maintenance…

“Solved mystery ...if key is left in immob to long a ECM 0750? Pops according to web. This maps to P1081, which was present. When I cleared it, car starts immediately
The burning question, how long is too long to trigger code?”

So is there any programming requirements or anything if I end up replacing the antenna key ring/immobilizer with a new one? If that is the culprit?

If you can find a good antenna ring, I'd throw that on. Frankly it's a great item to keep in the glove box. No programing required for just replacing the antenna ring. If you need a full on immobilizer module replacement, you likely need programming, new keys, new fobs, etc.

Must depend on the ignition switch model, the one I had had a pin in the center of where it hooks to the tumbler to activate the "gongs" when you left the key in. If I ever get back into the office, I'll take a pic of it.

Where’s the electrical on that? Does it push in the pin on the electrical part of the switch? There are no electricals on the tumbler assembly

I was able to swap a 1999 V70 immobilizer ring into my 2000 V70 and it worked fine. As always, I'm skeptical about 1998 or older in a 1999-2000. They're inexpensive to buy new and easy to pull from a junkyard.

When installing, be careful when you separate the top and bottom plastic halves of your steering column shaft. There are plastic clips on the top half which hold pins on the bottom half. Those clips may be brittle and break as mine did.

Also, the immobilizer ring has a tiny clip on it which is fragile if not already broken. The ring stays in place with the clip broken, but taking care when removing it would keep it intact, making it more stable.

You can tape the immobiliser ring in place once it is in place if the tab breaks. The column shroud will then hold it in place. As it just senses the chip in the key the accuracy of position is not too critical other than to see where the key is positioned.

This isn’t an antenna ring problem. Pulling that fuse is probably doing an ECU reset which helps the starting sequence.

If cranking is inhibited on a 1999 or 2000 car, your light control module , 2/76 is not grounding your starter relay. It does this under microprocessor control , not a simple thing to diagnose.

If it cranks, starts, stalls…that’s a bad key signal.
