Hi,RickHaleParker wrote: ↑08 Dec 2021, 08:13Photons get absorbed and converted all the time. That is how the sun heats the earth. The Photons in the refrigerator gets converted to heat and then the heat pump pumps out the heat.
Speed of light slows down in different medias. Newton proved this in his dispersion of light experiments in 1666.
Its the Universe that has a speed limit not light. Nothing can transverse Space-time faster then 299792458 m / s.
Yeah it is ineresting that this speed limit is quioted so much in so many places. It is also interesting to think about all the consequences beacuse of spacetime and the photon traveling so fast. As something approaches the speed of light the apparent time for that something slows down, so for a photon it must experience (if we can call it that) no advance in time.
Also interesting is if the universe is estimated to be something like 48 billion light years across but only 14 billion years old, then how ddi that 'stuff' out at 48 billion light years get that far out in only 14 billion years? Answer is some of it must have been travleing faster than the speed of light, at least from our point of reference. But since we believe that light can not travel through spacetime faster than 300e6 meters per second, then spacetime must be expanding.
Of course the consequence of this is that there are some things that are so far otu there that we will never be able to see them as they are 'now' simply because the light will never, ever reach us again.
Couple that with quantum entanglement with the hidden variable theory disproved and non locality and we've got a very strange universe.
The simplest explanation is that we as humans were born to evaluate eerything in terms of statistics. Everything we see, hear, feel, taste, etc., is an average of what is actually happening. So up to now all that has been found in physics was based on statisitical averages which are now being detailed in the quantum realm. It's not all that suprising then that we are seeing things that we dont understand. The technical ramifications are stupendous though as we will see advances in technology i dont think any of us here has ever dreamed of.
My first electrical engineering book was written by some very knowledgable professors. One illustration they made was about current flow as being a 'count' of electrons in two directions in a wire. They assured the readers that they were not really counting the electrons it was just how it worked in theory. Now some day it may becomes a reality we may be able to actually count the electrons.

Our universe can and has expanded faster then the speed of light. The cosmic speed limit is that nothing can transverse our universe faster the 300,000 m/s. Even if the universe expansion was limited to the cosmic speed limit we would still see the object where it was X number of years ago not where it is now because space is expanding. In other words we see the point of origin for the photons not the object.MrAl wrote: ↑09 Dec 2021, 02:47

Our observable universe is 48 billion light years across. There is no way for us to detect the true size of the universe. However they have detected gravitational influences that indicate some high mass structure outside of the edge of the observable universe but still within the universe.

The electron count in a coulomb is our best estimate. That why it is forever being revised. My first electrical engineering book was written by some very knowledgeable professors. I use to have fun with electricians, electronics techs and some engineers. I would tell them your wrong, electrons do not transverse a wire at near the speed of light. Matter of fact it can take a electron hundreds of years for a electrons to enter one end of a one foot wire then exit the other end of the wire. I got a lot of "are you stupid looks" for that. But what I said is factual. Do you concur or are you giving me that "are you stupid look" ?

Well a little off topic, but any reasonable engineer would know that electrons move through the wire at the speed of the 'drift' velocity and this varies with current and wire diameter and so this number can be estimated.
Also interesting is that for an AC current, electrons move back and forth so some remain in the wire forever.
One of the most interesting and controversial topics i have found in this area is called the displacement current that was apperently introduced by Maxwell. To date i dont think there has been any definitive explanation for what this really is, physically. The best setup for this is the vacuum capacitor. For a change in votlage a change in current is produced that appears to 'flow' through the capacitor, but current can not flow through the vacuum. So how is the series current maintained.
Feynman proposed that the electrons flow through as waves, and i think quantum theory might back this up.
There is another idea though that the electrons can shift without loosing their original placement. This allows electrons in the wire to move freely while the ones in the capacitor plates just shift temporarily.
Displacement current was introduced into Maxwells last equation, but that equation itself does not show any physical explanation it's just really a mathematical structure.

Planck , 1900 was the first to realize that quantum theory solved three problems classical physics couldn’t ( line spectrum of the sun, the photoelectric effect, and the ultraviolet catastrophe of black body radiation) but 24 years later it was the Frenchman DeBroglie who proposed that we exist in a wave/ matter duality
Once you are a wave you can cross vacuums , walls, barriers, without regard for physical things. Obviuoslym this is useful if you can’t get your hood open. Just put the liter of oil on the hood , invoke wave properties m and command it to couple into the sump oil
Google quantum mechanical tunneling to make your head get hot.

Deficiency in the theoretical understanding. Some day it will be retracted or revised like Einstein's cosmological constant and likely for the same fundamental reason.

It’s important to remember quantum theory isn’t fact. It’s just a set of mathematical approaches that work for things we observe that classical mechanics doesn’t predict.
Interesting philosophy questions arise though. In classical physics, outcomes are predetermined. If you add enough factors , you can throw a tennis ball and predict exactly what it will do. So in classical mechanics, there is no free will. Everything we do could be predicted with enough math.
This is disturbing.
Quantum says things aren’t deterministic but probabilistic. The famous Schrodinger cat isn’t alive or dead but a linear combination of a dead cat and a live cat.
Einstein didn’t like that. “ God doesn’t roll dice”
