Re: Power Stage Part Numbers

There is a table of compatibility in VIDA.

With your Chassis number ( Last six digits of VIN ) and the ECM part number you should be able to figure out which power units will work. Is you car a 854 or a 855?

The D+ supply includes a change in the wiring harness. The part number on your ECC should let you determine if you have the D+ upgrade, keep in mind some, of the MY 1994 where manufactured in late 1993.

This should solve the mystery of what all the power stage part numbers are.
Determine which power stages are compatible with you car.

Thanks Rick,
Thank you so much for taking the time to provide the information. Tbh I am lost looking at the images. Also, I cannot find my log book but is the vin number the same? 450652084800. I will have a look for my log book as I am going to need it one day.
Not to muddy the water but I have no idea why or who repaired the wires in the following photos. I traced the repaired wires to what appears to be a sensor in the left passenger air duct and right driver air duct. I cannot make sense of the repair or why the colour mix up. Just weird!!
Btw I am not sure what that slightly burnt area is on the rear of the Ecc. I will clean it and see if it makes any difference.
Thanks again Rick
Regards
Andre

Blimey Rick!
If I am reading the images you sent correctly then only 9134932/4 will work with my Ecc?
I've just ordered another 9166694 assuming the one I purchased was faulty.
Oh dear dear dear.

That is not a VIN number. VIN = Vehicle Identification Number. It is a 17 digit id code that is unique to that Vehicle . The first three digits will be a YV1.

You can find the VIN:
1. On the title and any other legal papers. The VIN is what connects the papers to the car.
2. On a riveted metal plate on the nearside front inner wing under the bonnet.
3. Viewed through the near side of the windscreen on a black metal plate
4. On the centre of the of bulkhead.

Post all 17 digits of the VIN number here.

Then I can short this out and you can quit chasing your tail.

It looks like a color blind mechanic spliced the pieces in to do a repair.
The sensors are probably the temperature sensors. Can you get a part number off them?

The 850 ECC is a mess across the model years. Volvo changed it more often then some people change their underwear.

9134932 is for later model cars and it is for LHD cars.
9134933 is for later model cars and it is for RHD cars. It might work if you find the correct ECC out of 1995 - 1997 850.

9166694 is for the P80 series 70 not the 850s.

9144355 is the only one that will work and fit with the ECC you have.

Many thanks again Rick,
This is turning into a nightmare and mostly because I have had conflicting advice i.e a resistor is a resistor and will work no matter the part number.
Anyway, I checked the vin number and as you described it is located on the passenger wing. They are identical to the windscreen number. YV1LW450652084800 I missed the letters.
I truly hope I can now order the right resistor to work.
I can honestly say that finding another Ecc from a 1995 850 will be almost impossible. Yes, I am as least 5 years too late.
I cannot see the part number for the sensors in the air duct, I could barely get the picture...Sorry!
I hope the VIN is correct and I can finally move forward without throwing money at the problem.
Many many thanks for ALL the help, advice and info you have so kindly offered not forgetting you time too!
Regards
Andre

I think you miss read one digit. YV1LW4506R2084800.
1994 850 wagon B5204S, M56, Chassis 084800.
ECC 9134769
Per the table, Power stage 9144355 is the only one that will work with that ECC.

I think some where down the road, or now, you 850 guys will need to get together and design a replacement Power stage. The Power Stage is just "programmable resistance" on the ground side of the blower motor. It limits the current to slow down the blower motor.

Rick,
Thank you again so much for all the info, help and guidance.
I guess I am back where I started when I removed the original blower resistor (9144355) and started to wonder if the LHD different part numbers will work or if any blower resistor that looked identical will work. Yes, the 9166694 from the v70 it a perfect match but upon opening the cover the pcb is very different to 9144355 which is why it probably does'nt work and I have another on the way.
I am going to think about my next step carefully. There is a slim possibility of a direct replacement although it involves 150mile round trip from London but the guy is not at all helpful to check and match part numbers plus my better half is on the war path with Christmas coming up.
Sorry, are you saying the only possiblilty of me getting the blower to work with my original Ecc is to find another blower resistor 9144355 and there is no other alternative? I just need to be sure. It will help me when I get conflicting info if I make the 150mile trip.
Regards
Andre

Is the UK version in C or F on the face? If it is F that could be the only different with the LHD version. US and Canada versions of the ECC for the later models and 850 are different as the US uses F on the dials and Canada is in C on the dial. Otherwise they are the same. I will have to look at the ECC system for a 850 RH v's LHD to see if they are basically the same or reversed. If they are just reversed it may be a case of getting a good LHD car version and having to look at the wiring diagrams and swapping pins in the connectors to align.

Can you pull any diagnostics codes out of the ECC?

I think the 1994 ECC has a internal diagnostics. Pull the ECC out of the dash. Open the cover and look for a diagnostics switch. Press the switch twice within 5 seconds. any codes will blink as three digit codes on a near by led. Have paper and pencil ready.

If it was in front of me. I would be looking at the signals on the three control lines from the ECC.
If the ECC is saying turn on and the power stage is not turning on the fan you got a problem in the power stage or the motor.
If there is no change in the input signals. The ECC is not commanding the Power Stage to turn on the fan. Its not the power stage. I is something up stream. This is 1994 the three control lines are most likely simple on/off logic rather then a data stream.
