1999 s70 AWD exhaust

Post by deano1 »

What is this exhaust can on the left hand side on AWD? Resonator?
s70 left.jpg
Anybody another tip to that can that somewhat matches left side?
s70 right.jpg
Like i would just hole saw into it that can and add new tip then cut out bumper to match like Volvo almost intended?
Might get a little extra exhaust tone out of it?

If you roll under you will find the pipe rolls into the left side then a crossover pipe carry’s it to the right side. That back pressure is important so don’t mess with it until you understand it

Also if you cut out the LHS of the bumper cover you will need to get the insert which I believe is NLA from Volvo.

Never quite understood why the XC and V70 AWD had that weird exhaust like they do. It may help to give the engine more low down torque, but then who knows.

I think that can is a resonator that eliminates drone because there is not another resonator anywhere else, just that massive Catalytic.
Pipe sizes are really good on this system so I doubt if any performance gains were lost but symmetrical tips would improve aesthetics back there. Kinda like the R

There is no reason to make the back end of the Rs look good as it’s behind everyone else …

R muffler systems are NLA from Volvo. All those XC owners wanted their cars to look like 'R's and bought up all the stocks, so those of use with 'R's are now left with aftermarket systems most of which are over priced crap made from T409 steel. If you can find a system made from Stainless T304 then that is what to go for. The noise they make varies and several owners have complained about the resonances and noise they make. So do your research first!

But funny thing,,, I took the resonator out of my s60 base b5244s m56 and it sounds great! Not loud at all, just a very nice burble at idle and comes alive right around 2800rpm.
But Not so nice for the resonator out of my 2001 v70 t5,,, maybe it breathes a little better? But not worth it because of the drone.
Not sure what I'll do here with this s70?,, kind of a unicorn type car so i don't wanna hack it up.
cheers
