Is it worth getting a genuine Volvo DiCE instead of a cheap knockoff? Cheap ones might fail and have to be repurchased which seems like a waste. Cheap ones likely can't flash or program, so how important is that? A Volvo one might hold resale value once you no longer need it.
The cheapest DiCE are about $35 if you don't mind giving credit card information to sketchy websites. eBay has them for $75 - $100 which protects your payment info. MVS user TacklaNHL offers them for $150, warning that they could fail but he tries to get good ones. Compare that to a $450 - $550 genuine Volvo DiCE part 9513000.
I hate buying junk and gladly pay for quality. I'm planning to pay TacklaNHL for one but still worried it might fail despite his efforts, especially if supply chain problems and COVID has made quality worse than usual. I could pay 3x the price to get the real one from Tasca or another trusted source. I see them selling on eBay for $450 - $750 with some for around $75 (suspicious?). The $450 sold one was used, suggesting that they have good resale value. $550 new minus $450 resale is $100, less than TacklaNHL.

Looks like I waited to long to buy a genuine DiCE. I read that on 1/1/22 Volvo increased the price of this (and all special tools?) by 25%. In 9/21, I saw DiCE for $480 on dealer parts sites and $550 at Tasca. Now it's $590 at VolvoSpecialTools.com (which appears to be the official source of Volvo tools) and dealer parts sites, and $680 at Tasca. No sense waiting for inflation to depreciate my money further, so I bought it from VolvoSpecialTools.
