Help me identify this part- 2002 Volvo s60 2.4T

Post by MaverickT883 »

I was replacing the ignition switch/steering column lock as it had frozen up and stopped working, and in the process of being a bit ham fisted, broke this cable. I can’t find a part number or name online. I’m not too familiar with Volvos, so I’m not even sure where to start to look. Any help?

Looks like the ignition/gear shifter interlock cable.

Edit: I found that the key had to be turned on to Position I or II (can’t recall which) in order to disconnect and reconnect the cable. But if everything was all locked up and couldn’t be turned it could be that ham-fisted was the only way.

That’s indeed it! Thank you, and yeah, it was completely locked up (seized in position 0). I tried cutting the old ignition switch open to get it out without destroying the cable, but i failed. It makes me feel a bit better knowing that I didn’t really have much chance at not breaking it. Now… on gotta replace it. Crap.

If you're like me and nowhere near a dealer, Volvo Toronto has decent pricing and free shipping.

I wonder how much hassle it is to R and R that cable. If you think there is little chance of your car getting stolen you might want to try some method of rigging the cable in a “permanently pulled” position and not worrying about reconnecting it to the ignition switch.

As far as the lock assembly goes, did surgery damage anything beyond where the cable attaches? The reason I ask is because even though your old one is all locked up they can often be fixed internally to work again.
