If you wonder about the condition of the turbo, then pull the fresh air snorkel, reach in and check the turbine for shaft play. Check for in and out play, and side to side play. I am not sure the oil residue really tells you anything about the turbo.

For the record the turbos on these cars are very hardy, they can run a long time, but check it out.

Bad oil seals on the turbo itself will cause the car to smoke badly but it won't cause the turbo itself to get oily.

If you do decide to rebuild it buy the Mitsubishi kit or maybe the ARD kit. Many of the eBay kits are pretty bad but eBay is OK so long as it is indeed a Mitsubishi kit and not just listed with the Mitsubishi number - read the listing carefully.

I don't know anything about the ARD kit but I can't imagine them sending out junk.

@ Ozark Lee... My car isn't smoking but I smell oil thru my cabin and the identical smell out the exhaust. I showed these same photos to my Volvo mechanic and he said its def the turbo seals. I also pulled the fresh air snorkel and there was a puddle of oil in the snorkel

I have a question for the Turbo gurus...

The background:
- My 1998 S70 GLT with 165K miles drinks 1qt/1,000 miles.
- My 2005 XC90 2.5T with 85K miles drinks 1qt/1,500 miles.

From my reading of this topic:

1. When do you expect the Turbo to be rebuilt?

2. According to this Volvo tech, they see the turbo seals failure at 110K+, is this true?

At a dealer it will be close to 2 grand to replace. The part is 1100 bucks plus 7.3 hours labor.

So, 8 years later the options for 15G rebuild kits are probably worse than ever.
ARD is not active anymore, so where could I get a quality rebuild kit or a rebuilt 15G or a known working 15G?
