Yet another 740gle non starter

Post by Wulfgar »

Hi all,

After days searching on the net for info on Volvo problems, i find this great forum.

Ok my problem is,
I've got a 740GLE 2.3 B230E with K-jetronic fuel injection, manuel injection.

I have been suffering from the intermitant, start, stall, lumpy idle between 500rpm and 1000rpm. for the past few weeks.

I was told it was the throttle body that needed cleaning, i did this, it was badly coked, anyway that did not solve the problem, and the car ran well when warmed up.

2 days ago it decided to give up the ghost completly, i went through the normal start up procidure, start, stall, start, stall, very lumpy on pullaway, then it cleared, i got to the end of the street, stoped and went to turn left.
The very lumpy acceleration came back and the car stalled.

After that i have been unable to get it to start again.

So far i have renewed the injector seals.
Checked all block connectors and sprayed with cleaner.
The cold start injector was checked and is working.
Checked all spark plugs, the spark is weak.
my friend pluged one of the H/T leads in to the coil and stuffed a spark plug in it, turned the engine over and the spark was slightly better but not great.
We then took the distributer cap off and checked the condition of the copper poles and the rotor arm, the copper poles and the rotor arm were heavily burnt, with a thick build up of dark blue burnt crud.
We cleaned all this off and re-installed the distributer cap and leads.
The cap was also coated in oil, so will need new seal.
We lossened the banjo on the bottom of the fuel filtter on the left of the fire wall to see if fuel was getting through when the engine was cranked, it was.
We could not get the top banjo undone.

None of this has worked.

We are going to try another coil in the next couple of days to see if that solves the problem, but i don't hold out much hope.

If anyone can think of anything else i should be trying or doing, please tell me, before i pull the rest of my hair out.

The electric switch on the throttle stop that clicks when you accelerate has also been adjusted so that it just clicks as you come off idle, is this correct?

Last of all, are there any good Volvo mechanics in Leeds west Yorkshire England?

I look forward to your replys

I don't know if this will help (probably not) but have you tried banging the fuel pump with a rock (or similar) as one other member of this forum did?

The reason why I mention this is that my father's volvo was cured by this method also. (different model though - 76 model 264 - keep away from them!!)

If it starts after that, replace the fuel pump. Otherwise good luck

The car sort of started up today, i checked all the rubber pipes for
air leaks, can't find any.

I cranked it over, pumping the gas peddle hard, it fired up and ran
very, very lumpy for about 10 seconds, before dying again.

It done this when ever i hard pumped the peddle.
When i stop cranking the engine or it dies, i can hear a lot of noise
coming from what i presume is the fuel pump just before it switchs
off.

I've got a nasty feeling the feul pump might not be getting up to
preasure.

How easy is this to change?

Hi Wulfgar

I don't know how easy it is to change on the 740, but on the 264 it was quite easy at the time from what I remember. Although I was watching and not actually doing it myself.

Good luck

I just thought of something.

The line between fuel pump and motor may be blocked. If the pump is working away there may be a blockage in there that is causing less/no fuel to get through.

Maybe this requires investigation.

Hi All,

The 740 is now back on the road.

Went to the breakers this morning and got 2 coils, 2 dissy caps and rotors, and a nice set of silicone leads.

Changed the coil and leads and it fired up straight away.
Runs better now than it ever did.

So thank you, to everyone that helped me on this.
This is a very good group, and i will continue to learn from it.
Hopefully i will learn enough to help others on here as well.
