06 2.5T Yet another low\no oil pressure tale

Post by LeftCoastXC »

Hi Guys and Gals. New owner, almost 24 hrs! Driving new to us xc90 home last night after handed over alot of 100's to get our hands on it and POW up comes "low pressure, pull over". Pulled over and oil level is fine, only a ten minute drive (8-9kms), so I continued on by taking side roads and keeping the rpms well down. I did manage to get it at a price that makes this a little easier to swallow but  .
Started and idled this morning and after 5-6 mins the dreaded message now came up as "no oil pressure". Did a fair bit of searching this morning and didn't find an answer with regard to flushing and a 15 min idle with the 'no oil pressure' message coming up after 5. I did see that these motors sense a very small drop in pressure and I hope this solves the problem. Wife is not super impressed by me wrenching on a vehicle we bought yesterday, really nor am I.
Do I flush, clean &\or replace sender, then drop pan and start orings (stupid question mark won't work, now I have a broken laptop too, DOH!) Don't want to starve bearings or turbo, tried that on a few toys in the past and always ended up with a higher horsepower toy, and lighter wallet, after the whoops.
Looks like a good forum and group of people, glad to be part of it and the Volvo family. I should be able to contribute to the answering side when I get through this and get a bit dirty working on it. I try and do everything possible on my own stuff as I tend to not trust "techs" that could be my children and have to plug in to diagnose a dead hole or flat tire. Not to say all techs are like this but I feel if I work on it as much as possible I save a bit of $$ and have a better feeling of when things aren't right.
Hoping for a bit of reassurance that I headed in the right direction. Off to local shop to buy flush and oil.
Thanks a ton, rather thanks a 2.25 ton (its AWD). Now that's bad humour!

First thing to do:
- Stop driving the car.
- Get new oil filter from dealer, about $8-$10. If you order bulk (like 5-10 filters) from autohausaz or eeuroparts dot com, you can buy Mahle filter for $5-$6/each.
- Use synthetic 5W30or 10W30.

Maybe the oil filter is too old (15K-20K on it) and starts to clog...

A couple things re "Low oil pressure" message:

1. You said oil level is good.

2. Clog (Sludge) in oil pick up mostly in cars with short trips and infrequent oil changes.
How many miles in the car?

3. Clogged oil filter

4. The oil pump in this engine is bullet-proof and lasts beyond 500K miles.

5. Bad oil pressure sensor

PS: Always hook a pressure gauge and check oil pressure first!

Thanks a bunch for the replies. I have run it for a about 5 mins since bringing it home. There was no noticable change in the sound of the top end, nice and quiet. All filters and oils for three changes to specs were purchased yesterday. Sender was ordered and should be here tomorrow. I will be picking up a mechanical gauge today and finding a place for it to live, permanently, in the engine bay. The car has 204xxxkm on it. Now, here's the good news bad news part.
Bad first, whoever did the last oil change managed to get the drain plug torqued so tight I have absolutely mangled it trying to free it. Started with a 3\8" ratchet, it's just a drain plug. Then put a snipe on it, still no go. Moved up to a 1\2" Johnson bar (I know I can pull WAY over 100# with it), nothing! Just to make sure it was truly f'd I hit with 1\2" gun. It's still there laughing at me, three hours!, and no progress. I guess the next oil change there will be metal in the pan after drilling out the centre of the plug to get it out.
Now the good, the seller is having a flat deck come by this afternoon and pick it up for repair! There's a first for me, private sale and he's going to stand up and fix it. After numerous text msgs through the course of the day it was decided that its headed to the shop to be gone through thoroughly. Now it appears I got a really good deal on it.
I will update the thread after I check in tomorrow afternoon over at the shop. Thanks again, cheers!

Hi folks, quick question. The cars at the shop with the mechanic waiting for parts (sensor, o rings, etc), should there tomorrow. Hoping to have it back for Wednesday. Why is the "low oil pressure" not a stored code (again no question mark, thanks Apple).
The mech said he fired it up for a min or less and things sound good, not valve train noise etc, here comes the flush and new parts. Thanks again for your replies

Did you do the basic: checking the dipstick and add oil if needed?

Yes the oil was good. I am going in for a flush and oil change tomorrow. I am interested to know if "LeftCoastXC" resolved the problem.

Sorry for the slow response, life's been hectic. I have a had one occasion when it has popped up on me since. But I was pulling about 5k passing up hill and floated some of the residual sludge in the housing I think. Not the best time to have the car tell you to pull over and stop. With the wife driving it I don't think it would ever see that side of the tach and the sludge may have stayed there indefinately. Did another flush and oil change after and have not had it again. Problem solved in my books, we'll see what pops up next. HTH

You may want to read the thread below in detail, sludge has been an issue in these white block engines with extended oil change interval:

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... e-a-Diesel

If I were you, given the fact that you had one episode of oil light scare etc., I'd replace the oil every 2K or so. In fact, many mechanic gurus recommend this in an engine with moderate sludge build-up.

Use Mann Oil Filter and synthetic. Do a few of these 2K change cycles to get rid of the sludge as much as you can.
