I found mine with the diagnostic LED lights in the engine compartment ahead of the RF wheel. But mine's a '94, and I think later ones went with an OBD system.

scot850 wrote: 30 Jan 2022, 09:01 what about computer software programs? You will need the connector cable though. For all the hassle, it may be worth seeing if a dealer can read it for you and then add the mileage on the way back.

Neil.
I use VolFCR with a Vw cable to read codes as it is a 1997. The car is so reliable I’ve only read one code in the time I’ve owned it since my dad gave it to my wife. Unfortunately it doesn’t read the mileage. This is the 2nd time the gear broke so I want to get the true mileage and I don’t know when it broke last as my wife doesn’t notice a thing.
As long as it gets her to work it could have square wheels for all she cares lol!!

I kind of dread Robert's Take-the-dash-off instruction, but if that's the best way to get in there....

Oh, I think I remember this one. May have been when I bought the replacement gears and then forgot where I put them!

Is this similar to the prying-up-the-dash technique that foggy dog was warning about?

Removing the speedo cluster is not that bad once you know how to do it. Takes me about 20 minutes to remove the dash top and the speedo cluster. You don't need to remove the lower dash.

Do you guys remove the entire top dash or just drivers side. I had to have my wife help to install and remove the console as you barely have enough clearance.

Btw the 850 obd ii app for android works
Amazing. You have full diagnosis capability, reset service lights and run tests and lastly read the mileage on 96+ Models!! Well worth the $3

Entire top dash cover. If you just pull up the driver's side there is a high risk of bending and cracking it.

+1 on this. Seen people post about this but you are likely to either break the dash or the instrument cluster removing it. Remove the whole top.

Ok good to know for next time. I assume there are more screws in the glove box and remaining vents?
