Yesterday, I got my Bluetooth OBD2 adapter and downloaded the 850 OBD2 app, and found out how many miles my car has on it. I bought it thinking it was 76K miles, but after buying it, it was apparent the odometer didn't work. It actually has 88K miles on it, and I've probably put 1000 of that on it myself. 11K miles higher than I expected isn't too bad. I was afraid it was going to be a huge amount. The thing that kept me hoping it was still a low miles car is that it seems to be quite original.... Timing components (and water pump) seemed to be original and in good shape, for instance.

My next "project" aside from the wipers and door lock pins/knobs I've started threads about, will be to check the gas mileage, now that I can keep track of the miles driven.

It’s a Resurrection car, we had to drop the entire back axle to service rusted fuel lines on this AWD

Is there any way to advance the odometer to show the correct mileage?

I was at a Volvo dealership years ago and overheard a customer talking to the service advisor about his 850 broken odometer. The advisor told him he'd have to get a new odometer with mileage reset to zero. The customer seemed shaken, quite proud of his high mileage. To this day, I kick myself for not interjecting and saying that the odometer gear could be repaired and he could keep his mileage. Would you keep quiet or share the information?

Yes, it can be advanced, but I'm not clear exactly how it's done. Robert has a Youtube video on it, but it still wasn't clear to me, even after watching it. I assume it's one of those things that's a bit hard to explain to someone that doesn't have their hands on it.

I will figure it out when I change that gear. I won't try it until better weather.

Either the service advisor would argue back or simply state that replacement was the extent that the dealer could provide, would be my guess. Many years ago (early 1983, I think) my grandmother bought a new Dodge that needed the odometer replaced, and I think it was installed at zero when the car had a few thousand miles on it.

I've done it. It's a pain but doable. Robert's first method involves advancing the smaller counter with a drill attached to something with a little friction such as a broken or short pencil with the eraser making contact with the small plastic gears. I tried using a dremel tool with small barrel sander attachment and no actual sanding material attached. Just the rubber holder. This worked well since I could adjust the speed. I abandoned this method because I got impatient and wanted to see how fast I could make the gears go. I broke one of the plastic teeth. The second method involved using a "punch" to push the pin holding all of the odometer numbers and gears in place. It's easy to misalign them but honestly it was much faster than the first method. You can simply change to the number you need to correct the mileage. I had to add like 80,000 to my odometer.

I have a spare block I take take a pic of. It's just a smooth surface IIRC, press fit with the coolant pipe.

Dollars?? Or did you mean $30?
300$ unfortunately. Realized I paid a bit of a premium for the volvo dealership rotor and crappy tire plugs. Rock auto will be in the future for the plugs as they were 7$ per as opposed to 11$ :(.

the distributor cap was cheaper at the dealer however the rotor was about 30$ more so 41$ pissed away. Happy thats about an hours work as opposed to 3 now.

This Saturday will be a bit of a do or die as im not sure if i have a blown head gasket. will make a separate thread
