It looks pretty much identical, if the rubber seal can be swapped it may work

Found this Finnish site, where a guy talks about it. Can't quite understand whether he says if it can fit it (google translation doesn't help)

On a russian forum, there seems another guy has installed the Gates and it worked well in a 2008 2.5T XC90

I have opportunity to buy brand-new 2004-2006 S60 stat for inexpensive price but browsing FCPEuro website etc., it looks like Volvo posted 2 separate PNs for Thermostat: 2002-2004 S60 vs 2005-2009 S60.

I put together photos so you can see.
Same engine, same 90-degree C tstat etc.
Does anyone know the actual differences are?

PS: I just want to get the inside tstat itself and ECT from let's say 31219205 and swap into my 2007 S60 car.
Just want to know the differences (other PNs). This is a good example that Volvo came up with so many different PNs for basically the same item.

@abscate,

That is optical "illusion" from the photos.

The moumnting flange to the block should be the same bc the Metal Gasket PN 8636573, is listed for all 2002-2009 S60 and 2003-2007 V70 P2 cars:

So,

Went to my garage and looked at some old stuff...

On the LEFT is 2004 V70 tstat itself, on the RIGHT is 2005 XC90 2.5T tstat itself.
They look identical in every dimensions, down to the 90-degee C stamp.

I wonder what all these different parts numbers mean, also if someone here has 2 units from 2002-2004 vs 2005-later to compare with.

Re brands...

I have always used Wahler bc this was factory brand.

I recently installed Facet brand in my 2006 S60 as a test, about $50-$60 online.
It is made in Italy.
So far so good.
Zero issues.
It came with the metal gasket in the box.

Facet is a less expensive option ($50-$60 vs $110 for Wahler).

Just put this out there for those who want to save some money.
