doing some googling on repairs vs swapping my 2001 xc70 faulty psychedelic rear view mirror, is it true they cannot be swapped?
my other option would be to replace the mirror (glass) only but i will loose the auto dim feature, my question is, is the auto dim feature worth repairing??
Ive succesfully seperated the glass from the pcb using a blade and if swapping mirrors causes any issues i plan to simply swap the glass
psychedelic rear view mirror Topic is solved

So long as the circuit board from your original mirror stays with the car you shouldn't have any problem. The board contains the radio receiver for remote keyless entry (individual programmed remote codes are stored on that board). It is also integrated with the immobilizer/key transponder system and is programmed to your specific vehicle. If you plug in a board from a used mirror onto your car, it won't start and your remote fobs wont work.
If you put standard mirror glass in it make sure to switch the plastic housing with one that has the manual lever.
I don't know if the board will be able to sense the missing LCD glass and trigger a DTC. Unlikely. Even if it did it would only show up in VIDA. A warning message or light would be highly unlikely.

How about just grabbing the glass and wires from the mirror part off of another P2 vehicle in a junk yard? Leave the board but replace the glass (front) piece.

Swap the board from bad mirror to a good mirror. Simple and easy.
If you want to start fresh just get a paired mirror and remote fob from a 2001 or 2002, however the small transponder from the original key will need to be transplanted from your old key into the new one if you have the newer style integrated key and fob (unlikely as yours is a 2001 with separate key so you only need to worry about the remote fob).
The transponder in the key is ONLY paired to the immobiliser system board in the right mudguard via the antenna ring. It in no way communicates with the mirror or prevents starting if mirror and fob are swapped as a pair
If you have the newer style integrated fob you will need to fish out the transponder chip and swap it into the new fob which is best done by getting an aftermarket blank fob.

Does anyone know what my problem is?
Car is 2007 S60 2.5T with 115K miles (rearview glass has compass)...
Is the solution a glass transplant (donor from junkyard or ebay)???
But even with glass tranplant, chances are the glas that comes from a used unit is prone to the same issue?
PS: I can see things well, it is just an eyesore, sort of...

IMO a swap to a manual mirror is best bet. I just did two of these, fairly easy to swap the circuit board. YouTube videos on it. I personally wouldn't trust a used autodim.

Could you provide detail for manual swap (PN, year, model etc.)?
I assume after the manual swap, the circuitry just sits there?
Is it a glass swap or the entire rear view mirror assembly? If so, any error code on computer?

I did the auto dim to manual dim swap many years ago with no error code problems. My car is a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 and I'm in total agreement with Krons to go ahead and do this type of swap. The best part of the manual dim mirror is that the dimming with the manual dim mirror is darker and that was very important to me because the autodim mirror was never dark enough for me.
The only difference between manual dim mirror and autodim mirror is the two wires hookup to the autodim mirror so you transfer the autodim electronics board but there's no connecting the two wires to the manual dim mirror. I did add a high resistance resistor between the two connections but I don't know if this is necessary.
here's a photo of the autodim electronics board with the two wire connections to the autodim mirror, after transferring this board to a manual dim mirror there's no longer a two wire connections to the mirror

Pretty sure any manual dim P2 mirror works. Careful work with a putty knife to open the housing and remove the circuit from the glass. Be careful not tp break the new mirror. Some housings may require trimming the internals for clearance. My circuit board had a compass and my manual dim didn't (nor did the glass allow) so I needed to trim.
I found this video helpful.

Thanks,
When I go to junkyard, how do I tell which is autodim or manual?
Just want to be sure I buy the correct manual glass...
