Throwback to the EPA mileage estimates which were always way too high....

Your mileage may vary....

A polite way of saying that is my experience but not to be taken as gospel..

My rear shocks were bad at 12y/100K...

I replaced with Bilstein B4 rear shock, about $50/each online.
Just drive the rear wheels on wood ramps.
During insertion, put the plastic tube in first, then the shock (since most of us don't have a lift like dealer, shops etc.).
If you heat the "nut" side with propane torch, it will come out easily bc the heat melts the factory red Loctite.
Trying to picture what you mean here. For starters, why did you choose to use ramps instead of a jack stand? Isn't it much easier to remove that bottom bolt when the shock is fully extended and not bearing the vehicles weight?

@br0dy519,

- I am getting old, I avoid jacking up the car and jackstand bc it takes time and effort.
With wood ramps: nothing to do, just drive the car up the ramps.

- Even with the car on ramps, the brand-new Bilstein shock barely sticks out 1 inch below the control arm.
I just have to push it up a bit and the bolt slides right in.

The idea of replacing the shocks while the car is on the ground has been documented in both P80 and this (P2) forums.

It is much more simple with the wood ramps...

Cool thanks for the tip. I'm gonna plop some cheapo FCS shocks and new Mevotech mounts in there and see if it helps my rear end rattle. I just got a new set of steel ramps this week so this may be the first job on them. (once the snow clears)

Don't use FCS shocks, they are terrible.
Use Sachs or Bilstein.

The mounts are good until 200K.

I ended up installing the KYB Gas-A-Just shocks. Seemed to be decent quality, middle of the road units - made in Japan. A short test drive, which included several speed humps, revealed a much nicer ride with no bouncing or rattling.

I performed the R&R with the rear wheels up on ramps.

I’m eyeing those too. Good price and well reviewed brand. How were your mounts on inspection? I think i’ll do my end links while I’m there too. Need a nice temperature day to inspect all these items.

@br0dy519,

Since you are in Windsor, you can order to Detroit and pick it up there.
Bilstein B4 rear shock is about $75/each or $150/pair.
US dollars...

Don’t get me started on Canadian entry requirements during COVID…. :twisted: So infuriating. The moment they drop the pre-entry test requirement I’ll be back over there. Per current rules, you could be charged $5000 if you try to re-enter Canada with a positive COVID test and would need to quarantine for 14 days. Sounds like hogwash but I don’t have time to challenge such things in court. My luck, I would test positive on my re entry test (has to be done in the states at my expense) and have to deal with the headache and quarantine. Not at all worth it for a day trip.

Rockauto has amazing shipping logistics where all of the duties are included for an extremely reasonable price. They’ve been a lifesaver the past two years during all of the border nonsense.
