Off Volvo topic. Replaced thermostat on the ManBeetle. Juliette was running cold, about 140F. Mileage was sucky at 25-27 mpg highway. Got parts from FCP dropped coolant.
Thankfully didn’t have to remove alternator, just unbolt it and move it starboard. The Beetle engine room is really tight. Alldata instructions suck on this one, too, lots of wrong stuff
Coolant was horrible rust colour, luckily at had 3 liters of pink at hand.
Loaded her up and no leaks, but no heat. Took her for a spin , temp now 200F and heat poured out. Mileage will be confirmed o a trip to Caitlin tomorrow
Husky inspected and approved all repairs
10mm battery

Heavy news.
Took a look at the coolant today and it showed slightly more dark stuff then had previously been in there. After checking the oil which was just changed and transmission fluid, i dipped a paper towel in it and examined the fluid. I am fairly sure its transmission fluid based on a heavier consistency and smell. I have plans to accelerate a radiator change and drain the fluid out and pump out the transmission fluid and change it. Doesnt look like much fluid has leaked and the transmission fluid level does not appear to have changed. I planned on doing a drain and fill on the transmission so ill use that as confirmation of my suspicion.
On the bright side i guess i didnt blow a head gasket and the transmission has not been acting odd either.
This may be hearsay but we will see.

Hello V70. I miss you. Take care. Signed, me.
Start a new thread about where this engine and transmission (and body carcass) wind up. I'm curious to follow its progress. If you want to sell the M56 and related systems, I'm interested. I'll be in Albany 4/1/22 weekend, coincidentally.
The engine has 215k miles on it. I bought from Erie Vo-Vo around 10/2009. Oil pan could use a reseal, probably got shifted around when crate shipped to my installer. Fouling on one of the spark plugs was a concern. In its last days, it would run for about 20 mins, then sputter to a stop until it cooled for hours. I only drove it 1000 miles or so with no radiator fan, only in the coldest months.
The M56 clutch developed a weird rattle at 160k miles (on the odometer, not engine). The knucklehead who installed the replacement engine also "replaced the clutch" but installed something backward (the throwout bearing?). The dealership had to replace it soon after. Still, when releasing the clutch in neutral, there was a clattering sound. Only way to stop it was to release the clutch gradually. At its current 275k miles, I felt like it was slipping a little, especially hot in stop-and-go Boston traffic.

Sounds like you may finally have an answer! I'd go ahead and replace that radiator, and you should hopefully be good to go at that point.yanga001 wrote: ↑16 Mar 2022, 11:23 Heavy news.

Did an alternator swap on the s70 UBG brand
Fixed power steering seep with oetikers
Discovered radiator seep at joint I think. Nice to be Spring where I don’t have to worry about freeze up
My little folding Tekton ratchet was perfect for the RN motor alternator bolts

Here is my alternator Tetris picture, not too hard to remove on an RN
Lift alternator out of AC bracket ( lower AC bolts loosened 6 turns) , pivot mount up then slide over to starboard to get to removal position

yesterday, finally bit the bullet and popped my alarm relay back in instead of a jumper wire. unplugged the horn alarm beforehand but it didn't even want to yell at me like it would previously, no flashing lights. plugged the horn back in and still not a peep from it. tried locking and unlocking multiple times but it appears my car remembered that i am, in fact, the owner.
