1998 S70 will not start after it's warmed up.

Post by Geotreker1 »

As I mentioned in the title my S70 will not start after it's warmed up but it always starts just fine when it's cold. I've replaced the plugs the wires the fuel filter and the electronic temperature control sensor nothing has helped. I had it scanned at AutoZone and it came back said something about checking bank one whatever that means they couldn't tell me what that meant unfortunately. It was stolen and driven for about 6 months including a couple of high-speed chases after I got it back it was a mess from perfect to a wreck almost, I've got it back in pretty decent shape overall except for this problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The engine coolant temperature sender has to be an OE Volvo one or you will have hard warm starts. They aren’t cheap but it is a critical engine part

Don't know if this applies to V70's, but on 240's there is a check valve on the return fuel line that sometimes goes bad. When the car is hot, it lets fuel by while it's sitting, and you get something analogous to vapor lock (on a fuel injected auto!) Replacing that valve fixed my hard-hot-starts on the 240.

No idea if there is an analogous system on the V70, but it's something to research.

Other quick checks

You can use a squirt of starter fluid to quickly see if it is a fuel delivery problem. That points to fuel pump relay or fuel pump.

Ignition coils can also fail hot. Are cap, rotor, plugs , and wires all new or newish?
