2002 Volvo S60 2.4 - shift/neutral

Post by chuckcintron »

I need to revisit this with you guys. My boss bought that used 2002 S60. 67,000 miles on it. The car is definitely doing "something" when it brakes to a complete stop, and it's doing "something" when foot off brake and onto accelerator. Kind of a 1/2 second pause...like it's shifting from D to N, then N to D.

He had it at the dealer for a failed alternator, two days after he bought it...they charged him $960 to replace it and the battery.

While at the dealer, he asked them to check the transmission and to check for software updates. They told him "let's not waste any money on software updates, and just see if the alternator now takes care of that transmission hesitation".

Yeah, right. Of course, the tranny pause is still there.

I thought the D-N-D shift was ended after the 2001 model year (?) What do I tell him to do...ignore it, or bring it back to the dealer and demand a SW update (which they will probably charge him for...who knows, could be another $500 knowing this dealership).

This is why I now regret breaking my policy of NEVER getting involved in recommending a brand/model used car, to anyone.

I told you some early02's had the stop neutral.
He DEFINITELY needs a software download and a tranny flush

Thanks...yeah I told him as much but the dealer steered him away from the SW update. I'll have him try again.

Looks like there was no recall on this shift-neutral issue -- so when you bring the car to the dealer and ask them to update the software I guess there's no way around getting charged for it.

Any idea how much they typically charge to do this?

All depends
Some dealers may charge as little as $75-100 while some may charge $150, luck of the dealer draw.
Of course there is no recall along with no recall for ABS modules and/or other parts which fail in 95% of Volvos
