timing belt repl 95 940 turbo

Post by cquarts »

When repl the timing belt, it goes around three main pulleys/gears. I know that the (top) cam gear has to line up with the notch at the same time the crank (lowest) pulley lines up with the notch at 12 o'clock straight up. But does the (middle) auxiliary gear (next to the tensioner) have to be in any certain position or is it just an idler used to course the path of the belt? Also, is it true that this 230 4-cylinder engine is NOT an interference type?

Opinion is divided on this one. Most books say "it is not necessary but as there are alignment marks they may as well be lined up".

The B230F is a non-interference engine.

Some belts lack timing marks but as long as you don't move anything it doesn't matter. I found it impossible to move anything by hand anyway except the middle pulley which isn't connected to anything.

On an English volvo site a guy posted a photo of his daD CHANGING A BROKEN BELT IN THE RAIN AT NITE IN 25 MINUTES, HE HAD AN 18V IMPACT DRIVER !. He left the radiator hoses connected and folded the radiator over the top of the engine to make room for the driver at the crankshaft bolt. Pretty amazing how simple it can be.

But many afficianados make it sound like you need NASA.
Its really simple, if I'd spent less time reading ....
