Today's photos: There were a surprising number of farm tractors on the secondary roads in Scotland. European tractors were ahead of US tractors to make modifications to allow safe operation up to maybe 30-35 MPH. US tractors did not have front axle suspensions and were limited to about 20 MPH. Can you guess I was raised on a farm?

Those are "talk tubes". I had to look that up just now ... it made for some awkward Googling. https://www.playgroundequipment.com/talk-tubes/

That's the same in Germany. The farm tractors are enormous and they drive 40 mph so they are not a hinderance to other drivers.

Seeing the farm tractors in Scotland instantly brought back memories about my childhood. I did not grow up on a farm, but we were surrounded by farmland. As a kid I was always waiting by the fields until a neighbor farmer would invite me to hop on the tractor.

Then in 1979 when I was 13 my dad bought a small farm tractor that he intended to use for firewood hauling. He taught me how to drive the thing shortly after we got it. The tractor was used frequently until 2004, which is when my parents sold their house to be with my sister.
He asked me if I wanted it. I said, are you kidding me, of course I want it. I didn't have space for it so I rented a garage at a farm (where else) and stored it until 2008. That year my parents came over and my dad helped to build a shed for the tractor, and I arranged for it to be shipped across the pond.
The following photo shows my girls sitting on it shortly after arrival in the fall. We were getting ready for a hayride. In the background is the car that started it all, 850 LPT.

Thanks for the Porsche tractor photo. I had noticed it in your vehicle list and knew what it was. I think it would be real cool to have one. I have to settle for the Farmall A and Farmall 400 Diesel that I have. These were made by International Harvester Company in the 1940's and 1950's. I started driving Farmall tractors when I was maybe 12. Dad had a dairy and putting up hay took up much of summers. To anyone that cares, the 400 is fairly unique in that it starts on gasoline until it warms, then the intake and fuel is switched to diesel.

Incredibly interesting and cool, Dirk, thanks for sharing. Lugnut, you too!

My dad worked for John Deere Industrial (yellow) his entire career, which sent us over the pond to England and Belgium in the 70s. I don't have any large tractor stories, but we did have a Deere riding mower in Brussels and one Saturday my parents threw a huge dinner party. They did that a lot in the 70s, it was a very internationally glamorous life, in an ex-pat way. Anyway, my dad mowed the back lawn that day, and around 6 or 7pm when the party was under way, it started to rain a bit.

My dad had taught me the basics of how it drove (not mowing) weeks before, then that evening he asked me to drive the Deere into the garage to get it out of the rain. I was nine, and I felt like a rock star in front of all those people, given the huge responsibility he'd just tasked me with. That was in 1979 and I still remember it clearly, that feeling of pride.

EDIT to add this was our house https://www.google.com/maps/place/Av.+d ... 4d4.397045 -- the one with the Prius and Audi in the driveway. The hedges are much taller than they were in the 70s.
