Evap issues

Hey folks,
Need some help with the Evap system. Keep getting a P0442, small Evap leak. Checked the j hose and seems decent enough, did fix a small tear in the hose but still coding.
The j hose connects to a powered device that has a junction with another hose exiting. The problem is this hose isn’t connected to anything.
there is also a smaller diameter hard plastic hose that has no connection coming from the fuel filler area.
Are these supposed to be connected? Seems weird that I have 2 hoses not attached and that one is soft vacuum line and the other is hard plastic.

I just threw a PO442 in my 01 V70 2.4t. I made an appointment with my local Volvo guys and they will probably "smoke" the system to see where any leaks might be.
I just put a strut mount and seat....and end link on my 02 V70 2.4t. So I still do some stuff, but I'll leave the codes repairs to my local shop.

If everything else checks out, there is a small vacuum pump in the system that periodically runs to check for leaks. If the pump goes bad, I believe it will throw this code as there is no drop in pressure detected when the pump is supposedly running.

My repair shop just called and found a leaking hose by smoke testing it. I didn't pick it up yet, so I'm not sure which hose it was.

The canister shutoff valve is open on one end. It allows the evap to vent to air for testing.

The small line has to be attached up at the fuel filler or you will code for an evap leak

It will offset a major leak code (ECM-439C). Easy enough to test the pump in VIDA.

My '07 XC70 is throwing a P0442 code. I thought it might be the gas cap gasket, so replaced that first. No joy. My next thing to check is the purge valve. Where is the EVAP Vapor Canister Purge Valve (Volvo #8653908) located? I have the replacement already! (ANd I need to fix the code to pass emissions in October.) (Is it a hint that after a fill up, there are fumes in the car the next day?)

The purge valve is located behind the intake manifold, near the starter. Follow the 5/16 or so ID hose from the front of the manifold back about 6 inches and you’ll have your hand on it. You will have to basically remove it by feel which is easy after the first time. I don’t replace electrical components without testing them anymore, for the purge valve that means either powering it with a battery or activating it through VIDA or a scan tool. My purge valve failure always caused p0496 and p0497 as well as p0442.

I estimate There are about 3 zillion possible places for a p0442 to occur from. Your fume smell might possibly be your fuel pump top cover which often cracks and causes a leak. It is worth checking out and somewhat easy. The fix using jb marine/epoxy is well documented in the forum.

The only true way to isolate a vacuum leak without wasting a ton of time and money is to smoke the system which any reputable shop is capable of doing.

Check the filler neck for holes in places where anything touches it. Lately it became a major issue for many P2 owners.
