I had been considering replacing my 03 Toyota 4Runner due to never ending expensive repairs it dreams up.
I had been considering a V8 XC90, but just noticed the fuel consumption figures. 13mpg city and 18 mpg highway. That is even worse than my 4 runner. It manages around 16mpg (US gallon) on mostly city driving which is even worse than my old 01 Suburban 5.3liter.
So although I don't like the 3.2 litre i6 motor (it is a gas pig too) I understand it was improved in 2010 if I am correct.
Ideally I am looking for an 'R' design car as the regular seats I find uncomfortable. Unfortunately those did not come available until after 2006 when my ideal engined car (2.5 litre i5 turbo) was last built. They are also getting up there in years and mileages. Also with that age comes lack of maintenance in our area.
So can anyone let me know what the real world mpg is of a 3.2 motor??
Thanks,
Neil.

Expect bad mpg... From my experience Volvo didn't focus on fuel economy until recently. The 2021 XC60T6 I am driving currently delivers 32mpg in economy mode, 27 in comfort mode, and 22 in dynamic mode consistently driving to town. Same drive, same no ethanol premium, same speeds using cruise control.
In my honest opinion if you want fuel economy, a old Volvo XC90 will not deliver. Even the new XC90s chew through fuel. I have even driven a 21 90 as a service loaner.
Get a 60 for better economy. Get a CPO 21 like I'm driving and get a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. June

I really don't like new Volvos and not just because of the price. Had a new XC60 loaner. It was a Meh?! car at best. Happy to return it and get the old 'R' back.
I do a low annual mileage (maybe 4-6000 miles if that) so mileage is not really a huge issue, but even I had to baulk at the 13 mpg on the Gen 1 V8 XC90. Up here most of those were sold with the 'R' design seats which is what I am after. Some of the later special edition versions up here with the i6 came with the 'R' design package seats. If I could find a P3 XC70 T5 I might be persuaded as there were a few sold up here in around 2015 or so (last of the P3's). Again with the low mileage we do, makes little sense having a high value vehicle that spends a lot of time in the garage depreciating (my 03 V8 4Runner has done about 20000km in 4 years for example and ok 2 years are covid years).
First gen XC60's have too many engine issues and the trunk cannot take a set of golf clubs unless you put the rear seats down. Not much good for 4 up going golfing. I am a rather large person so I find the V60 too small. Heck even the V90 can't squeeze a set of golf clubs in the trunk nor the S90.
Being retired now, newer than maybe 2015 is off the table as the used prices are still stupid. Maybe in a couple of years if prices get more sensible.
