Yes, I'm considering both options. I'll have more time to dink around with it in a week.

Any idea what the thread on the header/manifold is, where the pipe screws in? I've read "pipe plug" a few times, but I have my doubts about it being NPT.

...
It has a metric thread. I know I have used an oil drain plug before but do not recall if it was a P80 one or I bought one at the parts store.

I’ve got loose headers and can measure these threads when I’m back at my cars next week

a common place on naturally aspirated volvos tends to be near the flex joint connecting the manifold to the exhaust pipe. that was my issue, but it sounded rough and loud.
When I first start the car up, it's always sounded a bit rougher than I'd expect, but I've always assumed it was because I'm not used to listening to a 5 cylinder, or the fact that it uses a steel header rather than a cast iron
manifold.

What was the fix for your car, a new manifold/header?

Did you seal the threads with something? An oil drain plug would be a straight thread, that would not be conducive to sealing by itself.

unfortunately it's around 150 dollars ish, but yes. that was the fix. only difference is that mine was entirely blown out, some exhaust tape might be a better fix for you as of right now, but definitely new headers at some point. before going ahead and buying headers though, pop your hood, start the car, and listen around in the engine bay. this can be made easier with a long tube you can put near the flex joint and listen on the other end, to know for sure. or, if you're willing to trade risk for ease of access, just hovering your hand around the flex joint is always a feasible option to feel for any leaks hitting your hand.

Yep I glued it in with some kind of tailpipe sealant paste.
