Just to confirm...if we send the mirror to the company in TX as you mentioned in the other thread:
https://www.radar-mirror.com/product/au ... r-display/

1. Do they use your mirror as a template, then they provide their own mirror, with the window cut for the compass and sensor?

2. The mirror they sent back: is it manual or auto-dimming?

A1. They disassemble the housing remover your old mirror and then open any required windows in a new mirror. Then they connect the new mirror to the electronics and reassemble the housing.

A2. The Refurbished mirror will work exactly as it did when new. (i.e. Auto-dimming)

The Mirror on my S80 is perfect.

Take care

Paul

I wonder what the company in TX did for your rear view mirror that an average DIYer cannot do at home?

If I get a manual mirror from local junk yard (about $15-$25), I can swap as mentioned?
Wht functionality that you get to keep by using the TX company?
pgill explained it well. All comes down to how bad you want autodim and/or compass.

I opted for the simplicity of a manual mirror with no compass and wasn't afraid to give it a go. The company in Texas does make it easy to not have to tear into it.

I an just wondering...the compass display (such as N, S, SW etc.):

1. Is it on the circuitboard that shines through an opening in the mirror glass?

2. Or the display part of the glass itself?

It is part of the circuit board that shines through a clear section of the mirror. On my 08 when I did the manual conversion that is a feature I lost as the manual mirror glass won't have a clear section for the compass to display through.

Maybe someone will take a manual mirror and clear a rectangle, similar to the autodim mirror and install it?

It could be done, challenge would be to scrape off the silvering on the back of the mirror without making a mess of it.

UPDATE for my 2007 S60 with 119K miles...

The auto-dim mirror has been a problem for the last few years.
Finally had time to do it.
Budget ~2-3h so you can go slow and be safe.

1. The Compass feature: it was not accurate to start with...when going S, it always says SW.
When going N, it always says NW. So I decided to let it go (no etching of the new mirror).
Plus these days, we have smartphones, GPS etc.

2. The 2 bolts holding mirror for 2007 S60 were 8-mm, not 10-mm as some youtube videos
said (maybe 10-mm for earlier models).

3. The Torx bolt that hold the mirror to the celing light assembly is T30.
Watch the orientation of the washer, the little prongs of the washer point toward the mirror.

4. The GREEN connector: once you fold down the cover, use a small screwdriver and push the
small tab toward the connector to disconnect it. This trick is not mentioned in many youtube videos.

5. The putty knife is very useful to:
- Separate the 2 halves
- Separate the mirror from the circuitboard.
A hair dryer is useful to soften the adhesive.

6. Use 2-sided tape to glue the new mirror to the circuit board.

7. The little screen on the top that says "seatbelt" etc. Don't lose it.

8. The little square thingy...I don't know what it is but transfer it to the new housing and used a
zip tie as shown. Basically I transferred anything that has to do with the electronics over, even
the little thing that functions as a compass (that shows "N, S, E, W").

9. The thin black plastic "plate" that holds the compass display: remove it and discard it.

All in all, it is a good thing to do, now I can see the cars behind me well lol...

PS: Let's say you only have the glass, you can still use your existing housing.
Install the new glass in the existing housing.
Every time you need to dim, just move the whole housing up and down, it is
not as "elegant" as the housing with flip thingy...

Thank you all for your advices/wisdom...
