I do recall visiting one castle that had lots of relics and a guide to explain things. They had a rack of pikes or spears that had what looked to me to be mops attached to the heads. I asked the guide what the purpose of the mop was. He explained, that in battle, the weapon would get slick with blood, but the 'mop' collected the blood and made the pike easier to grip.
