Front suspension noise when turning with car stationary

Post by arrrxivvv »

I'm have a front suspension noise when turning the steering wheel with car not moving for a while now, the noise is shown in the video:

https://youtu.be/Mz_uajMat0w

It sounds like it may be coming from the springs, like to noise it makes when the spring seat fails.

However this noise has been there before I replaced the shocks, spring seats and sway bar link a year ago, and is still there after the replacement. I've then disassembled again to check the spring seat and the spring is properly aligned, and retightened the cross nut with the shock on the car. Still the same noise just like before the shocks and spring seats were replaced.

I acknowledge that it may just be that I still did a poor job putting the strut together, even at the second time, though is there other possible causes of this noise? I've seen some people on the forum had to re-tighten the sway bar end link.

Any thoughts?

I would look at the sub-frame mounts. I have a P80 V70R that drove me nuts for years with annoying groans from the front suspension. After replacing all the front suspension, multiple end links (different brands) anti-sway bar, springs, spring seats and top bearing plates and control arms, I asked the dealer to have a look and with prompting they checked the sub-frame bushes and found the RHR bush had failed and it was moving when turning.

Good Luck!

That might be it. IPD makes silicone bushing inserts for about 30 $.. could help. Could be front sway bar bushings too.. MDK

Not sure on the P2 if the swaybar bushes are bonded to the swaybar like on the older P80 models. The bush is vulcanised to the swaybar and eventually fail. IF the P2 version is the same then check there.

Fitting the IPD inserts may not fix the issue. They are designed to firm up the bush. If the bush has failed like the swaybar bushes it will continue to make the noise.

How about strut mounts? Did you put new ones? They are semi-easily deformed, the bearing race gets out of shape. Also a good mud splash will get dirt into the bearing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes I did replace them too when I replaced the struts.

Thank you for the reply. I checked the swaybar bushes, they are indeed vulcanised to the sway bar, seems fine.

I'll check the subframe bushings. What does failure look like? Cracks in it maybe?

I am again assuming they are the same as an older P80 model and are a rubber bush that is bonded to an outer ring and an inner steel tube that the bolt goes through. You are looking for separation cracks between the rubber and steel.

Sorry, I do not have a solution, just a similar situation that may offer insight.

I have a similar sound (same side too), but not as metallic- more of a rubber on metal squeal. It occured after I replaced the spring seats, strut mount bearings and sway bar links. A few years prior, I refreshed the front with IPD control arms, ball joints, tie rod ends, sway bar end links and for the heck of it, IPD's subframe bushing inserts.

For me, the sound would occasionally stop after driving in the rain or after raising the wheel off the ground. I've attempted to locate the source by holding components to feel for vibration while someone turns the steering wheel (or listening with a mechanics stethoscope) and spraying lithium grease into the strut tower (where I know it's coming from  ). An earnest effort was never given as my fixes did not remove a front end noise but add another. Attempting to pinpoint the sound was not successful either, as it seemed to come from many places. After reading the responses here, I think I will inspect the subframe bushings again, maybe lube between the inserts to see if they are the culprit.

Here's a write-up for replacing them, without specialized tools viewtopic.php?t=96106&hilit
