Today's photo: Union Pacific 844 locomotive photos by a friend. The 844 has been restored to operating condition and takes occasional trip across the midwest. Note the open drive mechanism. These massive machines were all designed with pencil, paper and slide rule. They did not have computer controlled milling machines to make the parts. All controls are mechanical gauges, levers, and valves. They did have steam driven air compressors and generators.

What are the torque characteristics of steam engines I wonder?

Historical note, the Earl of Atholl was a real cad, and birthed the phrase…” Don’t be an Atholl”

That "Living Legend" isn't very fuel efficient at only 15 to 25 gallons of oil per mile, and 100 to 200 gallons of water per mile. I wonder how much coal it used per mile before it was converted to No. 5 fuel oil.

I had to look it up as I was curious as well about this monster -

"The FEF-3 could reach and regularly run at 120 mph; one locomotive reportedly pulled a 1,000-ton passenger train at 100 mph. All FEF classes were considered by the Union Pacific to be capable of producing between 4,000 and 5,000 drawbar horsepower."

BTW, there is an Athol Idaho, I drove through it long ago.

I have been told the smaller steam locomotive on display in my town (a 4-6-2 type), was capable of 100 MPH, used 10,000 gallons of water in 20 to 30 miles, and 16 tons of coal every 100 miles. Water was typically available from tall water tanks at every depot and coal available from coal chutes at major locations which often was at a shop and crew change town.
