2000 V70R engine mount clarification?

Post by scot850 »

I was replacing the upper torque mount on my car (again) with the proper 'round' bush version and not the square version I had been told fit.

Anyway, I noticed a couple of things:

1) The upper torque bracket that runs back from the mount to the firewall, has a slot in it to take the bolt for the upper torque bush on the engine. The bush has a hole that is larger than the bolt the car has. The hole is approx. 12mm dia, but the bolt is only 10mm? I have a bolt from the later style square mount but it is too large a diameter to fit through the torque rod bracket without enlarging it. I was going to do that but then noticed the bolt that is in the mount is all the way back in the slot, So I would have to elongate the slot also.

2) That got me thinking that maybe a rear mount is failing allowing the engine to tilt further back than is should, and that is when I got more confused than normal! I could not find a mount at the rear where I expected there to be one of the cone style. So I went and checked that there is a cone shaped one at the front as I'd expect but none I could find at the back. I know the car has the pad under the crank pulley, and the AWD auto has another smaller mount mounted to the side of the transmission near the LH rear of the subframe. I had a look at Vida, and it shows something called a 'Impulse limiter' part # 8631021. When I went to price it at FCP, it says this part does not fit my car? Has anyone with a 2000 model AWD who is familiar with then engine mounts able to clarify if there is a mount of some form at the rear of the engine somewhere near the middle lower area?

Thanks,

Neil.

After speaking to an experienced parts guy at the dealer he was no sure and certainly Vida is of little help/guidance (it shows the plates for the sub-frame at the wrong end in the drawing, the ones under the rear sub-frame mounts).

So decided to jack the car up and get my fat body under the car for a look and found the little devil. The bracket is hidden under the rear of the angle gear casing, and it is the angle gear casing that is the point the 'impulse limiter' rubber cone touches on. Who knew?!

Had a look at the front mount (what a bugger I could have had plenty of room to replace that when doing the radiator!!).

How do you tell if it is worn? Do you go by the wire wrapped around it? If so the wire looks loose, but I don't know if that is just a by-product of the engine sitting on it versus it being un-loaded. Advice appreciated. The rubber does not look perished.

Thanks,

Neil.

Underrated thread.

Message me I have a question, well many. Im putting back together my 2000 V70R and truly what a PITA.

My question regarding this, amongst many, is do you know the torque specs for the transmission torque mount. The AWD specific one i got came and i had to undo the bolt holding the bushing to align it. At least i aligned it to the one i pulled out (which looked ok).

I just want to know how tight to do the bolt holding the bushing? Is there a trick to this? i saw another post where it was recommended to drive the car, loosen and retighten.

Anyways, endlessly confused.
Cheers

As per my PM reply, I'll look this up in the morning if a torque value exists. I don't recall if there was but that was 8 years ago!

I can not find any mention of a torque value for that mount. All other mounts are listed, but typical AWD info is missing. I am fairly sure I used experience to tighten it but the other option is to use the general torque values Volvo gives by thread diameter. Especially for the bolts. The rod with the nut on it I would be careful taking it to the value in case it breaks the rod off the rubber.

So M5 = 5Nm, M6 = 10Nm, M7 = 17Nm, M8 = 24Nm, M10 = 50Nm, M12 = 80Nm, M14 = 130Nm.

Hope this helps.
