BUT ... now I am less sure it's a wheel bearing, or if it is then which one. I'll update as I check into it.

Commentary: FCP kits are always the same total cost as ordering the parts separately - for ease of warranty return down the road I usually split it out and order each item on its own line. Also helps me keep track of what I actually replaced, beyond a "kit."

Swerve test is the only reliable way I’ve found. It’s really tough to do it by feel. I’ve had noisy bearings that spin fine and quiet bearings that were spewing rust

My observation is the right side (passenger) bearings fail first, followed by the driver side somewhat shortly.

Thesis - right side in North America drives more in wet, slush, and salt than the left, which leads to earlier failure.

OK thanks; I'm getting nothing from the swerve test, been trying it several days now. Sound never changes.

Up in the air I think I get noise from only the passenger front but I can't spin the wheel fast enough by hand, and can't tell if it's the wheel bearing or the axle carrier bearing. Because the axle bearing does click rhythmically (aargh!) when spun forward but not backward, however that seems separate from the hum - if there is one, and wherever it's coming from because I can't pinpoint the hum to the hub (or brakes, etc). AWD components seem quiet at those slow turning speeds.

Really want to get it up into the offending 25 mph - 55 mph range and have a listen from underneath. Rather than get all four wheels off the ground on the garage floor I'm going to swing by the indy, get it up on a lift. Haven't been there in about 10 years I hope they are still good. I need to fix this soon ...

At least if it's a front bearing I'll have that here by the end of the day.

You can try a shot of light oil into the carrier bearing and see if the noise eases.

I’m going to stick out my neck and say a noise that doesn’t change under load isn’t a wheel bearing.
