Looking for experienced help or a good shop in Bradenton Florida area.
I believe I need to do the dreaded B4204T11 engine piston and ring replacement.
It's on a 2015.5 XC60 T5 with 90K+ miles. Already did the oil separator (which wasn't bad).
I'm quite capable and have all the tools I need (except the Volvo specials) but this looks a little daunting.
I haven't had to pull a head off anything in 20 years and this one requires you to remove the cams too.
I'm 65+ with a wife and 2 daughters and I have never taken a car to a shop except for tires and alignment.
Except for the cars the kids wrecked I generally drive cars for 200K+ miles. That was the plan for the Volvo too.
I'd feel more comfortable if there was someone (even remotely) who has done it and could walk me through it.
Otherwise I would like to get a price from a reliable shop in the area that knows what they're doing.
Thanks.

Jim

You may wish to contact one of the two sharks listed here to inquire about joining their class action.

https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2022 ... ings.shtml

I have done it on a 2012, I removed the engine/tranny and went from there. I was under the impression that the rings had a re-design so I rebuilt the entire engine, looking back perhaps I wish I only did the rings. In this condition you will find the engine heavily carboned up.

A in-frame ring job is possible, but you will not like it. The cam covers, cam holding casting, and oil pan are glued on. They can be hard to separate and must be SPOTLESS upon re-assembly if you do not want leaks. Read that MANY hours on your back under the car unless you have a hoist. The working space on the front (engine front) side can be tight, you must remove the timing belt which requires removing a lot of other stuff, stuff you will likely want to replace while you are at it.

If you do not get the cams timed right you will bake the engine the first time it turns over. Volvo sells a crank locating tool that holds the crank in the correct spot that is handy, otherwise you must locate it by hand and make sure it does not move as you install the timing belt

You will need a cam cover compression tool, ring compressor, ring expander pliers, most other specialty tools can be shop made.

Great cars with cr*p engines, personally looking back I SO wish I would have just sold it, especially (see class action) since it appears Volvo did not fix the problem.

My two cents, your mileage may SIGNIFICANTLY vary.
