Heater hose access for turbo engines???

Post by Eddystone »

Have done the heater hoses on my non-turbo 98 V70. Piece of cake.

As usual, the T5 engine is a real bear for access to anything, maybe other turbos as well. From the top, there's a lot of turbo stuff down there, and it's not obvious how it comes apart. Is there any chance you can get at the heater hose ports on the engine block from the bottom? I just got the whole left side of the engine back together and running. I admit that the prospect of taking the whole right end of the engine apart is not appealing.

I have a number of repair issues I am trying to get on top of, and the hurrier I go the behinder I get.

All running and on the road.

I still have a brand new heater hose for my 850T from years ago because it looked like such pain to access.

Hey, could be worse, could be an AWD!

I did the top one but left the bottom one to the dealer mechanics. No way I was try to access that one myself! Hope to only need to replace it once so left it to the pros!

Do it from the top. Once you remove the air cleaner box and turbo intake pipe, you'll have a whole lot more access space. Not necessary but it also helps to remove the radiator hose, so you'll have better access to the block nipple hose clamp.

You'll need a long screwdriver or a socket with a long extension to remove the clamp from the turbo intake pipe. Left hand holding the clamp to prevent it from rotating, while your right hand turns the long screwdriver. You just need to slightly loosen the clamp just enough to pull out the intake pipe. Remove the PTC clamp and disconnect electrical connector. Pull the vacuum hose attached to the intake pipe. Wiggle, rotate, and pull the intake pipe.

The lower hose to water pipe clamp can be done blindly, depending on how the screw on the clamp is oriented or if it's with oetiker.

You'll probably need to re-tighten the clamps later so make sure you orient them for best access. On mine, I can now tighten the lower heater hose clamp with just the air cleaner removed and the intake hose intact.

Yup, what he said, go with oetiker or don't use cheap clamps. I used cheap ones and had to go back and replace them with norma type clamps.
