Drive Cycle With Front Wheels Jacked Up

Post by MrAl »

Hi there,

So what do you think?
Jack the front wheels up on a FWD car and run the routine drive cycle or whatever is needed to get the monitors ready.

Think this will work or will the computer sense that there is too low of a drive torque and not do any monitor testing?

If it did work it could help solve my current problem, which is getting the monitors to go ready.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.
1998 v70, non turbo, FWD, base model, on the road from April 2nd, 2015 to July 26, 2023.

Are you sure you even need the monitors ready?

I thought most (all?) states gave exemptions for monitors on a 98 Volvo. I know CA does and they seem the most restrictive.

This is gonna sound crazy but when I was having emissions readiness problems I got a bluetooth obdii reader and paired it with the torque pro app. You can configure to monitor the emissions readiness and just drive around until they all read "ready". I found a couple of places that would let me bring the car in and do the emissions testing without shutting the car off. That's the only way I can pass. However mine is a 1996 and now I only have to do safety inspections in Texas. My issue was the monitor reset on every startup. I never solved it unfortunately.

Hi,

How did you find that out?
I read on the New Jersey site that cars 1998 are allowed 2 monitors not ready but that coul dbe for other cars.
How would i find out otherwise?

Oh that's a strange one. I wonder why that happens.
The problem with this car is it takes several startup and shutdown cycles to get the monitors to flip to ready. Usually i just drive around in my usual routine of going to the store and a few other places and the go ready. That takes about a month or two i think. This time i am a little pressed for time because inspection is due end of month.

The policy is set by the states , following EPA guidance at their discretion. The NJ DOT website would be definitive here

A simple weak battery orbadatteryvcable(s) causing voltage to drop on cranking, would reset the monitors on restarts

I used to have a real nice smog guy checking my car. Sometimes if the monitors weren’t complete he would take care of it running the car on the rollers in the floor. He obviously knew the drive pattern for a Volvo, maybe they are about the same for other cars as well?

EDIT: I take that back. My BMW goes through all checks really quick compared to a Volvo.

EDIT2: Engine must be cold when starting to drive. Think I missed that a couple of times and had to redo it all over again.

My monitors will fully set on a 20 min drive to work everyday. No paying attention to any of the drive cycles.

The weak battery resetting the monitors on cranking bit me one year. If cranking voltage dips below 9V during cranking you likely will have trouble.
