Get Key Made For Volvo 1998 v70

Post by MrAl »

Hello there

What is the easiest way to have a new key made for the Volvo?
It's just a regular key with no electrical guts. It is cut rather strange though.
Do you think Home Depot would be able to make a new one?

Thanks.
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

Check if any of your local locksmiths have equipment to do this. We have 2 or 3 here in Calgary who claim to even do fobs for many brands including Volvo. Now I can't say the last is true but I have had Volvo keys cut by one of them with no issues.

Have you checked if the dealer can get one for you cut to your Vin#. Problem with cars this old is the original they cut to is badly worn so that is what the replacement ends up being too. The new one from Volvo will be cut to what it used to be when new.

Good Luck!

Neil.

Been a while since I had one cut, but maybe 3 years ago it cost me $15 CDN so maybe $12 US? at a local locksmith. Don't know about the Volvo key these days. Some dealers don't have the key cutting equipment any longer so they come cut.

Call a dealer and make sure the 18 year old on the phone is 100% clear it is a non-chipped basic key that does not need programmed. Neil.

Key part number for blank is : 9447947. From on-line dealer it was about $15 CDN. this is for a 98 car without the key antenna for the chipped key around the ignition tumbler.

Ok thanks i'll check that out.
I saw one website that makes keys and they do it from a photo of the old key. Think it works? Cost is $12 USD.

Look up above in this thread, a couple days ago I posted a link to another MVS user's positive experience with the photo method via an overseas vendor.

Yes, it seems to work well. It is your cheapest and easiest option.

I have never had that done but hey, from what Erik says it is really cheap and if it is just for a spare key then that might be ok.

Downside like I mentioned earlier, is that your 'new' key will be instantly just as worn as the old one!
